Dissecting Your Lost Fish?

My friend put his pirhana jaws into a jewlery-type box. I watched my dad try to resusitate a big koi we had years ago. Can't remember if it worked but he eventually dissected when it died to see what the problem was.

Thoe pics above, it looks like a snake. What was it?

Many people do practise post mortoms (sp?) on their fish. Most in SW set-ups with very costly or delicate fish. It is handy to identify what caused the death of your fish, so you can treat your tank and the other inhabitants.
Yup, this fish was expensive and i wasn't going to be left empty handed after it dies lol. I figured out cause of death. Asphyxiation, due to blockage of throat by gravel (bichirs need to breath air)

even if i did cut them open I don't think i would really know what to be looking for, so it's not something thats really crossed my mind before.
Its actually pretty neat, depending on what kind of fish you cut open. I was initially just exploring, but located the digestive tract and it air bladder.
What kind of fish is that astro boy? and how big was it?
Its a polypterus endlicheri , about 6" at time of death

I've helped prepair fish on the dock after we've gone fishing, but never one of my fish I actually paid for.
I had a brand new betta once that died a few days after I bought him, and I was tempted to dissect him...but he was so itty-bitty and I didn't want to be playing with knifes on something slippery and small ;)

I never disected any of my fish simply because I wouldn't have the right tools and it would be nasty if I did use a butter knife or something. But I have disected a salmon in 7th grade. I wonder how hard it would be to disect a neon tetra. :S

neat skull, once i get a bichir, and it dies, im going to try to disect it if i have the guts to. i think the only reason why most of us dont disect fish is because most of the ones we own are 3 inches or less, and there is nothing to see when its that small

I'll probably do the same to my bichir once he goes. Although it will probably be quite hard, I'm attached and he is only like 6 inches. Quite a nice skull though.

Yeah... The biggest fish i think i have right now is like...a 5" albino zebra...oh wait, oh wiat! I have a 9" plec..
