When one of your fish die, do you ever wonder what lyes beneth their slipper skin?
Have you ever thought about dissecting them?
I've never done it, but I've thought about it a couple of times. It'd be kinda hard for me because of the sentemental value of them.

Hmm, I would only cut one open if they were giving birth and died right there. I have thought of dissection though, but after I get attached to them, I can't.

I would find it fascinating to watch someone do this. I probably would even try doing it myself if I had a fish in such a situation.

that's an awesome skull astro!

We disected fish at school, just white bait(i think) though, nothing special.

Many people do practise post mortoms (sp?) on their fish. Most in SW set-ups with very costly or delicate fish. It is handy to identify what caused the death of your fish, so you can treat your tank and the other inhabitants. You would need to be knowledgeable on fish anatomy and general desease for a postmortom to have any relavant findings though.

That is very cool astroboy. I know a mate kept his dogs baby teeth...so why not your fishes skull! :)

Well I've scaled and gutted fish (in preparation to eat !), so what's the difference :dunno:
but no, I honestly haven't thought about cutting my own fish to pieces when they die :/

Ohhhhhh Noooooo......... :X

I'm much more interested in their social behavior, while they are alive, than in seeing what's going on inside of them.

even if i did cut them open I don't think i would really know what to be looking for, so it's not something thats really crossed my mind before.

In some instances it is highly reccommended that you disect fish that die is strange circumstances and examine the cell tissue under a microscope. In some cases this is the only effcetive way to diagnose the cause of death.

Of course, you need to know what you are looking for!

I have gutted a fish but never my own, they seem to small to mess about with and apart from that I probably couldn't be bothered.

But then again it could be interesting.

What kind of fish is that astro boy? and how big was it?

Necropsied several koi. I think the only tropical fish I've done this to was one of my marbled gobies. Determination stress....was really worth gagging lol. I can't stand the smell of fish.

I wouldn't mind dissecting my fish if I had to do an autopsy, or if I were a biology student. But since I don't know anything about what I'll see inside, I'd rather not cut 'em open :p
