Just got home and saw this on one of my Rams... She's been constantly scratching on the wood since i got home. Any idea on what it is? It doesn't look like nipping... it's a deep red that isn't so clear in the photo

Please help. I don't want my other fish to catch it...

huh, if its rubbing on stuff, that sounds like ich, but you aid it was red so i don't know. ich is tiny white spots on the fish, you can add some medication to the tank. watch out cause invertebrates are very sensitive to the medication for ich

don't add medication till you know EXACTLY what it is
if you are worried about other fish catching it, the put it in a hospital tank

Unfortunately, i don't have a quarantine tank so i isolated it in a breeder net so that the other fish don't nip at her... I had done a water change and tested the ammonia and nitrIte and got levels of 0 ammonia and .25ppm nitrIte which seems VERY odd as the tank has only been running for about 13 days now... really confusing. I do have plants in the tank as well as some driftwood and all the weirdness started happening after I did a close to 50% water change Friday afternoon. I added a little aquarium salt (approximately 1/2 tablespoon and raised the temp to 84 degrees. I did a quick spot check with the other fish for signs of ich but everything seems to be in order... I hope she doesn't stress out in the breeder net.

The tank has only been running for 13 days? Sounds like you havnt cycled the filter correctly to me....

Indeed.

Deejaya, that test that you mentioned, was that before or after the water change? And what sort of test kit are you using?

Yes, I know the tank has not fully cycled yet. It was a mistake on my part... And I'm dealing with the consequences.. I'm still wondering why my ammonia and nitrite were at such low levels.. Anyhow, Got home yesterday afternoon and saw that one of my angels had a white fungus/spot on its tailfin. I began treating the whole tank last night with maracyn two... Hopefully things will work out and the meds will clear any sort of disease or infection on the fish. The rams are noticeably "flashing" a lot less and the wound in the pic above looks like it's healing so I've got my fingers crossed. I've got to add today's dosage of Maracyn Two in a few hours. The tank itself is looking a bit cloudy and there is some sort of growth on the glass... maybe some form of algae.. It's a clear, spotty kind of growth.. any ideas? Regardless, I hope everything works out and my fish live through this...

The woes of a new tank... :shout: :no:

Here's the video of the tank currently with focuses on the infected/injured fish. Again, all input is appreciated.

Thanks

some of the fish look like they have clamped fins to me, it could be costia, you should change a good amount of water prob 30% the increase the temp and add some aquatic salt, di

What size tank is this? That's a whole lot of fish to add to an uncycled tank. I count 3 angels? They can be really aggressive and lots of times do not get along with eachother. They get large too....5-6 inches in just body and when you add finnage it's more like 10-12inches! I think you should retest your water and be sure to test exactly as the directions say. Your troubles could be from poor water quality because your tank is not cycled and/or aggression issues.

Just tested the water...

Ammonia = 0 ppm
NitrIte = 0.5 ppm
NitrAte = 20 ppm
GH = 60 ppm
KH = 80 ppm

Water Temp 83 degrees.

do a 50% water change, nitrite is toxic and is probably the cause of your problems, keep ammonia and nitrite readings below 0.25ppm all the time. You will need to do another 50% water change i the mornig to knock the nitrite down again.

I'm treating the tank with Maracyn Two so I will not do a water change until treatment is complete or if readings become outrageous.

do the water change and retreat the water, the nitrite will kill them quicker than any infection, its like standing in a burning building and breathing in smoke.
