Discus with one s get to 7" sometime 8-9"

Also Cichlids are the genus of all these fish.

African cichlids all come from lakes in africa. Go to the forum area above this called "African cichlids and Old world cichlids" this will give you info but theres hundred of africans and they get all different sizes!

As you seem like a beginner i dont think your ready to start with discus as you need a fully mature tank 6 months+ old. and lots of expirience also you need to read books on them and info on the internet.

but aficans are easy to keep so you could have a tank with them you need about a 55g to keep africans and 75 for discus.

Cichlids are not all the same genus. Not all African cichlids come from lakes.

Most African cichlids get pretty large (there are some exceptions), but there are a number of South/Central American cichlids that would be great in a 36g tank. You could try Bolivian Rams, most any Apisto (such as Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids), German Blue Rams, or a few others. Most of these, though, are very sensitive to water conditions and take a little bit more work than some of the more basic types of tropical fish. Pick some pretty ones, read up on them and see what they need, and then decide on the ones that are right for you!

You don't need a tank 6 months old to house them.3 weeks to maybe one or two months.IMO anything else is overkill

er you do. a 3 week old tank has probs only just cycled. and Discus need a FULLY mature tank. imo Fully mature means months so would say 6 months. when in 1st few months of my cycle i had a few spikes of various things after it was cycled. after 4 months i hadnt had naything for a while so i waited a couple of months. and got my discus.

i have put discus in a 4 week old tank a few times and had no problems at all !

Well thats my own opinion. as dif areas have iff water like my ater has nitrate in it. so i have do treat the water or get RO water. thats why i got my tank stable for at least 4 months.

Discus need a fully cycled tank, if you are careful with feeding you can add them into the tank as soon as cycling is complete. It is safer to wait though, or use filter media from a cycled tank then your ready to go from day one.
