I really haven't done much research on the Discus, but wow I have seen their prices, are they hard to breed is this why they are so highly priced?

They are pretty delicate, and have difficult (for some) requirements to achieve. granted, some people have very good technique in raising Discus, but others have had them go sideways for looking at them wrong.

Oh, well they are very beautiful to watch, maybe in the future I will devote a tank to this kind!

well next weekend my pocket will be empty!! haha Ive been waiting to get my ph right and then its shopping for discus! My bank account will soon have cobwebs :(

It's also difficult to raise them in large quantities because they rely on their parents' skin secretions for food when they are young. Because of this the number of eggs laid and incubated and fry raised are considerably lower.

Not to mention a lot of breeders change 50% of the water in the morning and 50% at night every day. That's a lot of work.

Although that was true in the past, it is now possible to raise them with the mucus secreted from their parents bodies. It can be quite expensive to purchase the foods since they come in small poritions. The survival rate of fry is slightly lower but it's ver increasing.

They not a delicate as some people mention, it's put down to the amount of preperation and effort you put into setting up and maintaining. Who's a better fishkeeper? somebody who has kept fish for 10 year and dives into keeping a certain type of fish without researching them thinking s/he's capable of keeping anything

or

The new fishkeeper who's only been keeping for a month or two and reads everything thay can, slowly set up and moniter the tank and only put the fish in when the tank is truly ready?

Got mine for $20 each. One got killed, returned the other one. :p

That's strange, my LFS has them for $8 CAN each....they're not that popular a fish in toronto though....
where? in toronto (me) they are quitre cheap as i stated, $13.5ea

My juvenille Blue Diamond was $75 (Australian Dollar)
and my juvenille Orange Pigeon was $55 (Australian Dollar)
The fully grown ones were around $150 - $300 *faint*

Discus are delicate but all they need is alittle care. I do a 50% change daily but with my setup it only takes me around 15 minutes. If you devote time into caring for them and spend the money to get some nice stock then you will be sucsessful.
