Discus

Well I still think 5" should be fine, but it like I said can vary on the sex, strain and even specific fish. Guess we will to agree to disagree on this one.

And you are correct, never been a huge reptile fan although I did catch and keep an iguana for a day, and kept a few little lizzards for a few months. Know a little bit for work too, but that's about as far as I go :)
Fair enough, once again I'm saying in general I think most adult discus that are 5" are stunted to some degree, but as you say there are many other factors...Just wondering but are you sure your discus is actually 5", might be worth having a net and measuring out of water.
Be interested to see some pics too, always like to see top quality discus :good:

I'll see if I can dig up some recent pictures to send you and PM them. Haven't officially measured it though, but the sales rep did and said it was 5" can't remember if that was TL or SL though

Going down to Brentwood next month for a reptile show too-http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/php/detail49_119819.php
I need to search around for some stuff to sell.

Only 15 mins away from mums house....Tempting, tempting, 0hh so tempting.

..You have to agree they are some beastly looking discus, and the young look in good shape.

You better snag em' before it's too late. They look pretty good man and 10 pounds sounds like a deal ;) couldn't tell you for sure though, don't know the exchange rate :p

Are you located in England? I have seen a few pictures of Chens Discus and they look amazing too!

About 18 dollars here. Yeah really good deal. I would definitley do it as long as I had the money and a spare tank.

Spare tanks aren't the problem :p
Thing is I already have 7 tank to upkeep, and 14 reptiles (soon to be 16 when 2 more eggs hatch)...
Think I'll sell one of my 8 gallon ones as the light borke and the plants have been wasting away under hair algae for a while now..

Well good luck with them. Keep me posted, especially if you choose to get them.

I've seen Wild Heckles at about 12" (by eye) TL, and most Tank Bred Discus are as a result of the 7-8 seamingly legitimate repeorted Heckle spawnings from people who have provided photographic proof... This means (on paper at least) that most Discus have the potential to get as large as Heckels. In breeding, fish husbandry and other factors can all contribute to final size though

Discus need a mature tank, at least 6 months old, to do well IME. They want to be "over-filtered" and warm on a good diet with clean water. Clean water on my system means 50% twice a week. A good diet will be about 1/2 - 1/3 dried pellets, 1/4 - 1/3 frozen/fresh meat (mine get Tropical Quintette frozen) and the rest as veg :good:

All the best

Personally I just stick with a 40-50% waterchange once a week, if i do it more than that my clown loach get hacked off, they dont like water changes. They are in a 340L bare bottom tank with a couple a clown loachs and a couple of angels (shock horror to some!!)

Glad to know the diets ok lol, i have never used beefheart before, never saw the point. Every day the tank gets a good pinch of JBL Novobits (much prefered to Tetra Prima as the granules are smaller and they dont spit them back out), then once that is cleared up (with clown loach in there it doesnt take long lol) then they get 2-3 cubes of frozen foods (mainly so much so that the clownloach actually get some because the discus and angels are so gredy!) usually at least 1-2 bloodworm and 1 either mysis/krill or greenfood, Then they get a generous amount of JBL Spirulina to round it off. Feeding is usually started when i get home from work at 8pm and then until i turn light off, usually at about 11-12 to make sure they eat it all before adding anything else, somedays they dont get so hungry whereas other days you'd think id not fed them in weeks!

I also hold the temperature at about 27.5-28 deg C and add melafix with most water changes as i find it chills them out and the loach too and they have been looking better since. Oh yuh, i have two tetratec filters running on the tank, a 1200 and a 600 so double the filtration and the only decor in the tank is a few bits of bogwood with anubias on for the clownloach to hide in/under/behind should they want to but tbh they spend so much time doing 'the funky clown loach dance' that the lack of decor makes it easier for them to move about.

Lol, I know what you mean, some people are very forceful in their beliefs of how discus must be kept, but the reality is they are getting much hardier.

I kept clowns with mine too, cory's and a rainbow fish.
