I was thinking about getting a 55 gallon tank, getting 2 discus, and breeding them. Any suggestions or comments on anything?

for breeding, sponge filter, bare bottom tank, R/O water if you wanna make it easy, if not then REALLY clean and tip top water, and dont put them in a place where theres alot of human traffic. They are FIERCELY defensive of the fry and will hurt themselves if people stare at them or put their hands near the glass. Make sure you have plenty of food ready for the free, BBS decapsulted is a winner.

GOOD LUCK :)

Soft water is a must, best way to get it is with RO. You'll also need to buy a breeding pair unless you want to buy 6 fish and wait for them to pair up.

just to clairfy... RO water is NOT essential to breeding discus... but it can help, just incase your wanting to keep the cost down tetraman :)

In my experience no, there's a few threads on here discussing it, general opinion I think is no, but some people do it successfully.

discus if you can meet the standards of quality water. they pay off big time! my advice is gettin 5 or 6 discus in the 55gal tank n wait till they pair up. discus are best kept alone.

discus are best kept alone.

I hope that's a typo! Discus should not be kept alone, they need to be kept in groups or mated pairs.

Angels would be easier to keep, but Discus are not hard as long as you research properly and provide them with the conditions they require. IMHO your tank isn't large enough for an Oscar.

.. I think by "alone" he meant in a species only tank... as in, no other fish aside from Discus, rather than onle discus on it's own, which would be a bad idea....
IMO trying to buy a pair and breed discus when you've never kept them before is likely to be an expensive error - breeding pairs are not cheap, and ones which are of a quality which warrants breeding them are also expensive. They are not the easiest fish to keep, and therefore to breed /rear. You will also need a series of grow-out tanks.

i meant the only species.

There's no need to keep them in a species tank as long as you choose suitable tank mates. All you need is a calm and gentle fish that will handle the water parameters that Discus require, prime candidates being some tetras and cory species. From my own experience I have found they settle in better and quicker with tank mates present.

Congrads in getting me in the most confused state of my life. Now my question is not what I CAN get, but what I SHOULD get. The choices are:

a) discus
B) angelfish
c) oscars
d) a community tank
e) other

On the angelfish one I was trying to do b parenthasis, but thats a smiley code.

I already told you the tank isn't really suitable for an oscar, let alone more than one. It's suitable for a,b,d and e dependant on what that covers. What you should do only YOU can decide! :)
