Hi everyone,
i am new to the fish forums but i have been keeping fish for a while now
currently my fish tank has no water in it but i am hoping to start keeping fish again and i was wondering how hard it is to keep discus?
i have also heard rumours that neons sometimes nip the discus tails, would i be able to get discus with neons

thanks
jakey boi!!

It depends how big the tank is.

Discus arent as hard to keep as their reputaion suggests as most tank bred now and alot hardier but they are not a beginners fish by any means.

What fish did you keep before?

Ive nver heard of neons nipping discus but I would recommend keeping cardinal tetras with them rather than neons, they are bigger (less chance of being eaten) and alot prettier.

Best thing to do would be do as much research on discus as you can, try a google search and look into their requirements etc.

Cool, I love oscars. If I were you Id read up about the discus a good bit and only you know if you are really ready to keep them.

hi,

keeping discus is as hard as you make it, regular water changes and good filtration. change at least 10% twice a week. soft water as well, low gh and kh about 5ish. ph about 7ish.

hello

Just one point.... I used to have 19 cardinals with my 6 six discus. Now I have 1 left :/ One of my discus appears to be a great hunter and he has killed 18 of my cardinals. I am just waiting for the last one to disapear into discus mouths.

Discus aren't too hard to keep at all. You've just got to be a lot more careful with your water quality. Keep ph around 6.5-7.0 and the water soft. Feed them well with high protein foods (beefheart is my personal favourite) Your water temp will need to be around 80f so you need to select tank mates and plants accordingly. As for the neon/cardinal debate cardinals are a lot better with discus as they come from the same waters and therefore are used to the temp.
