Discus - Why So Many Conflicting Bits Of Advice?

Just so you know, fishkeeping is always going to have conflicting information and advice, because it is hard for us to tell how are fish feel to some extent. You can always tell if a fish is sick or not, because the bacteria or fungus or parasite is always going to be documented, and stay the same. You can't tell if he likes this fish to keep him company or another, because most fishes have a diffrent personality then the next. I would say fishkeeping information is more of an opion then anything else.

I've read that angels can pass SPIRONULEUA VORTENS, and certain worms on to discus fish , though apparantly their is no scientific proof of this, and if anyone can tell me what Spironuleau Vortens is LOL i would love to know.

I'm not sure how true that is. I know lots of people/breeders that keep both discus and angels together and haven't had any problems with either. I may think that this was true from wild angels/discus brought together in the same tank. Most discus are now tank bred/raised.

I have 9 discus in a 75 gallon tank, daily water changes, varied diet and as i speak one pair have 3 day old young in the same tank so that surely must say something.

Maybe some of the more experienced people who have recommended min 10g+ per discus could help me out on a thread on the chat forum (which should have been moved to here by the mods but for some reason has been overlooked)? I'm getting a real bashing for saying that 7 discus, 4 angels and a black ghost knife fish have no place in a 180l (40g) tank. Apparently I'm flaming and making an idiot of myself.

So someone else want to step in and help hand out some decent advice? I've been asked to keep my nose out because I dont have discus and therefore am not entitled to an opinion.

Thanks.

I didnt say you could put 7 Discus and angels in a 40g tank. I said you could put up to six discus in a bare bottom tank on their own.

Uhh no I don't think you could. I've seen 50g tanks barebottom, with only 5 Discus and a few Cories, and the Discus weren't completely peaceful towards eachother. I couldn't see how well that would go over with 10g less and one more Discus

I must admit to not liking barebottom tanks just from a purely aesthetic standpoint.

I have kept and bred discus and they are not as delicate as you may be led to believe but the filtration system must be as good as you can get
I used to use 75% RO and 25% townswater run through a MHA/CBR filter
They used to feed on shredded prawn, bloodworm, shredded chicken heart and Tetra prima

They are beautiful fish but you do need to put the extra time in for them to flourish

Well, I don't think one has to own a species of fish to be able to help.

I've owned an ungodly amount of different cichlids and piranhas but that doesn't make me an expert on them. That only makes me an expert on the fish I've had. Others that have had the same species of fish will have had different experiences with them and likely a differing opinion based upon those experiences.

Reading helps a lot and you can learn a lot from online sources having never kept that particular species of fish before. Anyone who disagrees with that shouldn't bother posting here since by reading these forums you're doing exactly that...learning by reading an online source.

Dismissing someone as not competant to reply because they haven't kept the fish before hurts all of us, along with the person doing the dismissing from learning from each other. No mater how long you've had fish or how much you think you know, you can always learn from someone else in some way shape or form. None of us are always right and I would hope that if someone disagrees with me they would let me know so I could learn from them.

LisaQ i have to agree with you. There are other threads running on the same topic at the moment and lots of conflicting advice. i think 10 gals per fish is right considering they need exellant water conditions, which surely cannot happen if you are pushing the max with fish.I like most people would love more fish in my tank but i am old school and with these expensive and mildly delicate fish feel it is not worth the risk.
