Discus Tankmates

substrate wise id say argos playsand , a group of discus makes quite a mess and with sand the mess just sits on the top and is easy to see and just suck up with a syphon. plus if you get seterbais , they will thank you for it too . fish wise when i was set up with discus i had 6 discus , cardinals , rummynose , sterbai corys and a pair of gold rams .

for your tank , assuming youre on the 400L end of the scale i would go with something like

6 to 8 discus
30 of either cardinal or rummynose tetras. depending on what you want , cardinals will shoal but spread out around the tank more , while rummynose are much more active and tight shoaling , constantly all swimming around the tank as 1 big group . personally i prefer rummynose for their behaviour .
10 to 12 sterbai corys
pair of either gold or german blue rams .

I would go for rummy nose tetras but i want something a bit more special.
corys would be a yes and defenatly some rams or similar.
i Would like some plecos maybe golden nuget or zebra if i can save up abit.
Thanks
Lloyd

The high temperature really does limit you for chooses, I think Rummy noses will be the best choose.
from what i have read plecs can be risky because sometime they latch onto the discuses slime coats but temp wise both would work. GN can be quite aggressive though so i think a Zebra would be the better of the 2.L333 and L270/chocolate zebra plec would both work temp wise aswell, the chocolate zebras are alot cheaper than Zebras but lack the stunning white colour. Or if you want something a little bigger Panaque nigrolineatus or Platydoras armatulus. Like i said though all of them suggestions are just based on temperature requirements i have no idea if they will actually work.

HI thanks for the help :good:
so i think im going to go for 6-8 discus, 20-30 cardinals/rummynose tetras maybe a L number pleco and maybe 10 corys.
Another thought is would a blue acara work with the discus?
Thanks
Lloyd

no blue acaras are deffinately not compatible with discus. temp requirements aside , ba's are far too bolshy to mix with discus

Ok how dose this sound then:
8x discus
2x german blue ram
2x golden ram
1x flash pleco
20x cardinal tetras

Checked and all temps are compatable, so just checking they will not fight. :good:
Thanks for the help

sounds perfect , just be sure to give the rams plenty of territories/caves etc . i would stock it like this myself. cardinals 1st as new cardinals are very prone to ich when introduced , watch them for a couple of weeks , if all is well then add the rams , corys and plec , then a couple of weeks after that add all 8 discus at the same time .

Right thanks think i know what im getting then, just need to wait for the filter to cycle and then im away.
Who would you advise to add first?
Thanks

no worries , enjoy setting up the tank , and of course plenty of pics :good:
