Discus Tank

Would an 18" tall tank be enough for discus to live happily? its 48x15x18 55usg /212 litres.

I'm no expert, but I think you will find that you are just shy. You might be alright with 5.

Everything I've read and heard is that 18" is the minimum depth you need for Discus.
Discus need 10gl of tank each, and should be stocked in pairs with a number of 6 as the minimum because they are schoaling fish.

If someone does not give you a solid answer try posting your question in the "new world chichlids" section.

It is the minimum size but should be fine. You can have 6 discus and a small school of tetras or corys in their. I have a 55 gallon that houses my breeding pair and they seem fine. Just make sure you get at least 5 discus with a max of 6. :good:

It is the minimum size but should be fine. You can have 6 discus and a small school of tetras or corys in their. I have a 55 gallon that houses my breeding pair and they seem fine. Just make sure you get at least 5 discus with a max of 6. good luck

Sorry don't mean to highjack this post, but Mark...what kind of Corys do you suggest that can take the high temps needed for Discus?
I'm in the planning stages of an SA tank, and I've been looking for Corys to add but can't pin one down.

sterbais are the most common ones, they go up to high temps happily, most of the others like something around 25 while many common corys found in your lfs like bronze/albino and peppered like the lower 20's, but will cope with 24/25 without keeling over.

I really had my mind set on a nice school of Corys for lower level dwellers. I was about to give up. Nice to know I have an option.

I would agree with tizzer. Sterbais (or however you spell it lol) are the best suited for a discus aquarium. I have a school of 6 in my 55 and absolutely love them. And in my opinion they are the most beautiful corys.
