Hey everyone,

At the moment i have a tank with malaiw fry which i am keeping untill they are large enought to introduce into my main malawi tank. When that day comes i am changing this tank to a Discus tank!! I have done alot of research and im looking for some help/tips.
My plan is as follows:

10 Cardinal tetras,
2 Discus,
1 Bristle nose,
10 Cherry shrimp
10 Green shrimp

My first question is, will the shrimp be ok with the discus?
What other tankmates would you guys suggest?
I have heard some people keeping rams with discus, is that advisable?

Thanks,

Kev

rams, cardinal and bn are good with discus or you could have rummy nose tetras or apistogrammas they are pretty fish, not sure about shrimps someone else might know. As for the discus they are shoaling fish and tend to do better in a group, 2 might get aggressive towards each other unless a breeding pair.

thanks for the reply angel. rummy noses were a thought too but i think cardinals look better in a planted tank. Never thought about apistogrammas... i was eyeing up some double reds last week at the fish shop and i really liked them :)

demonmagus, i havnt updated my profile in over a year i think  Since then i have added another 3 tanks to my collection, the tank i have at the moment is a 3' x 1' x 18' but i also have plans for a large tank around the 120g range. lets not tell the girlfriend about that one yet tho

Hi,
I wouldn't keep Discus in any less than a group of 5, unless it is a proven breeding pair, and they reccomend between 8-10 gallons per adult discus :D
On another forum somebody has mentioned keeping angels ith dscus, most people don't approve but, if you buy the angels at the same time and size as the discus, i have been told they should be ok.

I definintly reccomend Apisto's, as they are truly good fish :D

Oh, and i haven't got discus, but have been researching for them as im getting some soon :D

hope that helps

Lots of people agree with Angels and Disucs, lots also, do not. I say it's okay. I've seen tanks with them togather even agressive male angels breeding and still they were okay. If you do do it though, I recommend only a few and a lot more Discus a ratio of 1 to 5 would be great IMO.

Personally I'd revisit discus when you have the larger tank. You can only keep two if they are a breeding pair, and your tank isn't really a good size for discus with one dimension only being 12". You certainly do not have the space for more than 2 and I wouldn't buy fish intending to move them to a bigger tank later on.

I'd stick to tetras and apistos or rams for now.

I agree :good: Discus are really easy to stunt, and you don't want that...
