Hey all, I'm currently doing some research into my next tank project which is to be discus and am reading a book that suggests a fine grained dark substrate such as sand. I intend to keep smaller species of plec with the discus as well as cardinal tetras. Will the other 2 sepcies be ok with a sand substrate?

they should be fine I've had both on sand (during my sand phase  ), I have also had discus on both gravel and sand and while sand is more attractive in principal I find the gravel easier to clean nicer for that reason.

my 2c

Lots of people keep younger discus without a substrate, so that it is really easy to keep the bottom of the tank completely clean.
This aside, I'd say sand as tey like blowing on it when they're eating - they sort of blow near the food particle which lifts above the substrate so's they can munch it.
