Is it OK to cross discuss strains? I ask because I have no experience in this whatsoever. I have a mixture of discus in my main tank at the moment and am aware they will freely breed with whoever they like :) Is it a bad idea to cross them....or can some nice fish be produced by doing this? Obviously this is how new strains are made but I dont know how discus genetics work so I dont want to end up with bad fish. Any1 who has info on this please let me know :)

It is completely fine to interbreed different color strains; they're all the same species. There were at one time only about 2-3 color strains until breeders like Jack Wattley began to develop techniques on how to keep and breed discus and began to breed and interbreed (making the discus today less hardy) for color strains. Depending on the strains that breed you could possibly end up with sterile fish, or your discus may be sterile to start with and may never be able to breed at all.

well ive got a mixture of cobalt blues, red turqs, green discus, and royal blues....this ok? :p

heh....

I ended up unexpectedly welcoming myself into the discus world today....

mine looks like a mutt of three different kinds, but it looks good.

I hate to jump on your post but I'd just to like to check you know what your getting yourself into.. the use of the word 'unexpectedly' is a bit worrying when it comes to Discus....

I hope you know this but, one discus should not be kept alone, it should not be in a 10 gallon, and your 38 gallon isn't suitable for a group and the fish you already have. General rule is to give each adult Discus 10 gallons each, again this doesn't mean you can keept one in a 10 and 2 in a 20 etc. You should look at keeping 5 as a minimum.

If it really is one inch taller than it is wide then it may develop problems in future or already be stunted, though some are slightly mishapen and can be healthy. It's best to buy round discus though. I hope you know what water requirements they have and that you tried to match the parameters of your supplier.

so does anyone have any experienc with crossing strains? if so what are the results?

yea he had a post on what could go in with his oddballs in the oddball section and someone kind of jsut dropped some on him unexpectedly. so that's what he meant by just "unexpectedly welcoming" himslef to the discus world.

i hope that didn't come off as too harsh, my apologies if it did. :/

ok...back to the subject. has any1 got experience with crossing strains?

i dont have any experience with it, but i have heard you jsut get liek a color mixture in the babies. like sometimes new color patterns and stuff can form, but no real damge is done. all discs are the same species. who knows... maybe you could create your own color strain :good:

hopefully someone with experience will come along for you.
