Hi all.

Am looking around for a good place to read up on discus as i have emptied my tank and started over after a good clean.

Anyone know of a good place for discus info? im reading any discus related threads i can find on tff so dont say look here lol =-0

Thanks all for the help

Hi the best advice i have gotten is just by using google.

What size is your set up?

190L aiming for 3-4 discus with my rare lda16 bristlenoses and a few corys

have found a few things on google however im looking for certain info like water stats chemistry how to achieve what ios required etc

Just a fully cycled tank is all you need, no need for ro water either, if you are not going for bare bottom i would say sand and lots of amazon swords planted, they love hiding behind things so some smoth rock faces and maybe some slate so if you are lucky they might pair off and have some flat surfaces to spawn on.

4 would be a good number even 5 at a push with the tank size, however 3 would not be a good idea as the two dominant ones would pick on the less dominant one eventually leading to death, they would then start on each other so you need a good number to spread the bickering amongst them.

Water changes every 2 days 10% and one larger one per fortnight of 40% of the tanks capacity

Foods

Tetra prima, high quality flake, discus diet frozen food, the odd treat of live bloodworm and other live foods.

4 is my ideal number, the gf has been given a 1" discus that she thinks is "cute" so so is going to putting that in her 2' for now till it grows to about 4-5" then it will be joining 2 discus i have on hold at the moment (1x red turq 4" 1x red snakeskin 5")

regarding temps i have heard mixed things, some people say 26 is fine, while some say anywhere up to 29. Also Ph is confusing with the amount of sites i read, most say they prefer around 6 or so however some places state up to 8 is fine as long as the chemistry is fine.

Also regarding softness the water from my tap is around 6 degrees and i have read this is about right so i wouldnt need to bother with peat etc.

Thanks in advance

I dont check ph, i dont use peat, i keep my dscus at 29 degree's any lower and they get sick velvet/white spot etc and parasites, they are happiest at 29 degree's. And i use stress coat to treat my tap water i put it straight in out of the tap and they dont seem to mind the couple of degree temperature change in fact its how to get them spawning

As for the small one in your girlfriends tank a 2foot will be fine upto 2.5"-3" any bigger and it will most probably stunt its growth so it will need moving at around this size

Dont scare yourself off with all these scientific ways of keeping fish because its not always the way. Just a well maintained tank with the correct temps and surroundings is all you need for healthy discus. However ph and things do come into it more when breeding

You only need to know 5 letters...BIDKA

BIDKA - The British and International Discus Keepers Association

These people are the experts...A site dedicated to Discus only...They helped me through many a tough spot.

I would definitley recommend you up the number to five or six. As for wate changes, they are small and 10% daily definitley will end up stunting the fish. You will need to knock off LARGE daily water changes, as you will need to be feeding them lots to acheive proper growth. As for resources, this forum is definitley a good one. There are a few good books out too like Bleher's Discus or Trophy Discus (although these books to go quite in depth.) If you have any questions feel free to PM me or post them on the bored. Make sure the tank is cycled before adding your Discus!
