My tank is Juwel Rio 240 Litre (4ft) and I keep 8 Discus fish of around 4 inches. I know that Discus fish chase, nip & bite eachother but mine seem to be doing it all the time. Won't they get stressed out and maybe die??? maybe I have too many Discus and should get rid of some???

i have discus in a rio 240

i have 7 discus and 5 clowns with a selection of tetras copper, lemon red eyes i also have two addtional filters wet and dry
imo i think that they are setting up pecking orders i have had the same problems untill my turquoised and my orange heckled grew far faster than the other 5 who occasional fight but not too much anymore as they all know whos whos in the order i did have 8 but one of the smaller heckled discus killed the pidgeon blood :-(
ps this side of the tank is my unplanted side :fun:

pps i like the discus you have very nice lookig setup you have crack monkey :kewlpics:

I just noticed this post and was wondering if you could post a pic of the orange heckle. I have never seen one.

i get this with my discus, they'll always at each other its the chiclid way.

The pecking order has changed 2 3 time in my tank, i leave them to it , but keep an eye on them , as some times it go's to far, and you can end up with a poorly discus sulking in the corner.

Mine are the same, they seem to re-establish the intermediary pecking orders every day (although they seem to know and accept that the biggest one is boss!).

They often unite over a common cause (normally to stare at me when they're hungry) and swim peacefully in their group of six, but when they are feeling bullish they'll chase and pester each other.

It's rare that a day goes by without at least one of them flashing their 'eek stripes' (as I call them) during a skirmish, but they are thriving and seem to be doing well, so I'm not too worried.

I keep promising them a bigger home as they grow bigger, a new project methinks! :D

do you have plant's? drift wood ?

Not sure if you mean me or not, but I'll go ahead and answer anyway! :p

Got plenty of nice white pieces of oceanic rock (don't know what type, but they look almost coral like) and plenty of plants. Lots of areas for establishing territory and hiding away!

However, talk about speaking too soon...

I'm away from home for a week and had a call yesterday (just after posting the above) from my fish-sitter saying one had been found dead yesterday afternoon  No symptoms, not sure why he suddenly died, they've all been in great health recently and eating like piggies. My first discy-death in the eight months since I started with them. No problems with tank or water or anything and others are fine. Maybe just one of those things that will remain a mystery. Sad though...
