Hi.

I just bought some new discus (after pretty much an year of making sure my aquarium is stable and perfect) and as I researched what strain they where I couldn't find one that satisfied me... the guy who sold me the discus is quite a genius on the subject, but he works there as a hobby and is at the store only weekends so... I was wondering if maybe because these fish are still young, perhaps their true patterns and colors haven't yet arisen? I wanted to say they were brown discus but they have a very violet hue so I can't make up my mind.

Cheers.

Yes, Discus color can change drastically once fully grown.

I lived in the Caribbean and we had the same problem. Discus didn't come in very often.

You can try checking with various Discus farms in Asia. They are used to shipping internationally to places like North America so they would probably be your best bet. You can always ask your LFS to order them for you too!!

What sort of age am I looking at for full colour to develop?

IME they start showing colors from about 1.5", but take untill about 6" to become fully developed :good:

That explains why one one of mine has a decent amount of colour.

There's a clear "tinge" to ost of them, and you can see what they could look like - hopefully they'll be bright blue soon

I think I read somewhere that most discus show full colors after a year but that some blue strains can take up to 18 months.

Edit: Maybe it wasn't blues, but reds that take 18 months. Im trying to find my source and will edit again if I come across it...
