Hello my discus finally hatched a batch and got some free swimmers, only about 5 left from what i can but this is there first batch so i wasnt expecting large numbers.

The strange thing i was always under the impression that once they had free swimming fry they would not lay eggs and would just take care of the fry, well yesterday to my suprise they had another batch of eggs and are not looking after the free swimmers and eggs is this normal

I'm gonna pass on your question about normalities on care, as I haven't bread discus yet, though I'd love to at some point

Congratulations on getting some free swimming fry :hyper:

All the best

Thanks its great having some of the little guys finally swimming i think a couple fell foul to the filter and not sure what happened to the reast but the 4 or 5 i can are doing well and so are the new batch of eggs im a little worried the parents might exhaust themselves though by looking after fry and eggs

It can happen that they lay again and ignore the fry especially if they don't have many fry and don't feel they are worth raising. Are they taking care of the fry now?. Sponge filters are best for raising fry or put a sponge over the filter intake. Are they the only fish in the tank? Using soft water, turning down filter flow and raising temp slightly all helps to get better fertilization and egg hatch rates. Also when the fry hatch its best to gradually harden the water to aid fry growth and this sometimes helps stop the parents laying again so soon. Good luck with your new batch of eggs keep us updated, love to see some pics.
