What is the ideal combination for Discus and Rams in a 26 gal tank? Is there any of those 2 species in particular that come reccomened to mix? Would it be possible to keep a crayfish type creature in with them? how about a sailfin plec?

Thanks for input in advance

Hi there welcome to the forum! Rams are a fantastic little fish for a 26 gallon tank how ever discus get far far too big for a 26 gallon tank same goes for the sailfin plec. Also most crayfish are not good with fish and will nip or eat fish, but you could have some kind of shrimp :) I think in a 26 gallon tank you could possibly get away with 1 pair of rams and 1 pair of an other type of dwarf cichlids like nannacaras or apistos. Also instead of the sailfin plec which gets to well over a foot long maybe look at pitbull or bulldog plecs these stay much smaller and are much more suited to your size aquarium :) So your stocking could maybe be
2 Rams
2 Apisto agazi (or similar)
2 Pitbul plecs
10 Hariquin Rasboras (or similar)
5 Amano or wood shimp (though these might be snacks to the rams or apistos)

Thanks so much for the infomation Wills, I'll look into it straight away!! I've got a couple of Cherry shrimp, could I whack them in? Also instead of those Rasboras, could I put in Rummy Nose tetra? I've always adored them but never owned any.

I would go for Bolivian rams over German Blue if you plan on keeping them with rummy nose tetra.

Yeah I agree with Jim with the bolivians and the tetras they look good together :). With the shrimp i said about the big ones because cichlids like shrimpy snacks and the small ones like cherry are a bit too tempting but it can be done and some apistos etc ignore them altogether its a bit 50/50.

Would a Kirbensis pair be trouble with that lot? What about a single Firemouth?
Thanks for the help so far

What are the dimensions of the tank I think the foot print of it will depend on which cichlids you can and cant have. If its a 2 foot I would stick with the rams and or the apistos - if it were me I would get a group of Apistograma Nijsen or Panduro and get 1 male and maybe 4 females the females are absolute stunning! Their common names are panda apistos and well deserved they have a base colour of yellow with black panda markings while the males have an iridescent blue sheen to them with nice finage.

But if its a 3 foot tank the kribs could work but your over all stocking numbers would fall also I would just stick to just the kribs then. Im not sure about the firemouth as I have never kept them but again if you went with the firemouth I think your stocking would be a bit less as well

My tank is 80cm x 40cm x 30cm back. I've had both Kribs and Firemouths before, but I'm unsure about the mix.
