Discus And Beefheart

I will say this only once........

Show me the scientific papers, not the opinions.

so far all I have seen here is the same old argument & baseless speculation, to date I have seen exactly NO papers on this subject, no studies on this subject and no comparative life cycle experiments on this subject. I have seen endless pages of ill informed pseudoscience & bull. There is no evidence against the feeding of BH, just a lot of speculation, much from people who really should know better.

Having spoken personally with several "major" breeders ( including 4 Aquarama/Aquafair winners and 4-5 Duisberg winners ( sometimes the same person LOL) on this subject [ & no I wont name names] they all feed it & recommend it, Stendker feeds NOTHING ELSE, & I challenge anyone to seriously fault his fish. (seriously because all discus have faults). I have stendkers that are 9 years old now, & looking a bit tired, but they do that LOL. Personally I am more inclined to believe those that do over those that talk, especially when those that talk offer no alternatives.

If discus were meant to have lived in a glass box they would never have been in the amazon, is as valid as the no cows in the amazon approach, AFAIK there is no RO, prima, or any other prepared foods there either, so unless we are going to import amazon sediment & fauna we cannot give them a "natural" diet.

& for the record I have been breeding discus for nearly ten years ...LOL

ok yes it works for these breeders, but u are using breeders which is a biased opinion. they use it as it makes them grow quicker and get large good looking specimens, which is what wins awards. these people alot are in it for the money, stendker is known for it, yes he uses beefheart produces good fish but in it for monay as a breeder.

heiko beiher is the best guy when it comes to discus and is the main voice for discus. he is not have a biased opinion and not a breeder, is not in it for the money. stendker is just a famous breeder mainly.

you obvoiusly dont know heiko then.....

most of the breeders I have met are seriously into this as a hobby/personal interest as much as a job

im not so sure i will admit that i feed my discus a regular diet of beef heart tetra prime and peas but in the wild were would discus have acess to such a high protien un natural diet i am considering replacing beefhear with a shrimp mussel mixture instead

I agree with mike, there's no real substance to your argument.
They (breeders etc), and I use it as its a good source of protein in small amounts, making them grow faster. The shape/size is all line breeding, unless it is stunted.I still stand by my original opinion.

I would assume you are going to be using amazonian river shrimp & mussels then?

not sure yet im still reaearching

something else to consider is that a lot of farmers feed there cattle with hormone treated foods so are we introducing these hormones into are discus and we all know that hormone treated discus struggle to breed

please, do some research.

heart used is all from animals fit for human consumption, & therefore more than good enough.

hormones used break down rapidly, especially after death, do you actually know what hormones are used & why they can cause problems? in fish, cattle and humans? ... didn't think so... I am really glad to find out that hormone treated discus are hard to breed, (like any chemical it is the dose, not the exposure that may cause problems) I'll pass that on to certain asian breeders I know.....

I have always fed my discus beefheart. It is a homemade mix of beefheart, fish, spirolina, garlic, spinich and soya protein, and i have had healthy, happy, breeding fish, no fish having heart attacks so will continue to use it. No dead cows in Amazon but no flakes or tetra prima either
