Discus And Angels

Im am soon to get a 75 gallon tank and am going to have,

10 cardinals
4 harlequin rasboras
5 or 6 discus
A few hatchet fish
1 G. Ram

Could I possibly have a few Angel fish?

Discus & angels don't mix well, principally because angels tend to be more aggressive feeders & the discus end up starving and intimidated.

it can be done, but it can also get expensive & IMO not worth the aggravation

in my experience it's fine.
i'm runnin' a 65gal aquarium with
angelfish, discus, emperor tetras,
and rainbow fish (boesemani and red irian)

this is one of my Freshwater Amazon tank Set Up
and it never gives me headaches since.

i had 2 Angels with my Discus and one as mike os said bullied my Discus into a corner and imtimidated them so i had to remove him, the other is still in the tank and is fine with them.It can work with adult discus if they are already settled in the tank and the angel isn't too aggressive, but be prepared to remove them if it dosen't work as discus get ill easily if they are stressed by aggressive tankmates. A group of Angels will definately compete and win as far as food is concerned.

I keep two Angels with my 6 Discus and have done for a few months now. No problems as yet, and the Angels are at the same size as the Discus. If anything, it's the Angels that get picked on. The Discus and angels mostly ignore each other, but the Angels will occasionally try to barge in for food. When this happens, the Discus they are trying to push out will chase teh Angel arround the tank untill it goes into hiding. The Discus and Angels then go back to normal. They both get enough food, and at about 5-6inches each they are near adults, but not quite. I will watch carefully as things progress though, as I know some people do have issues with them

This is far from the truth. Infact, I keep my Discus with an Angel in a smaller tank than a 75 and mine are thriving. I have been told by a Discus breeder that Angels will help shy Discus become brave.


I have found that my Discus have no problem eating and even out compete the Angel who waits by the side for scraps.


I have had no problems with Capillaria and believe this to have no importance in mixing Discus in this day and age.

Yes, as I mentioned above. It's called Capillaria. It's an internal parasite that Discus have a really tough time with, but most other fish can live their whole life with.


Capillaria doesn't really exist in tank bred fish anymore.

I wouldn't add anymore then two. I did find though, that my now grown Angel was bullying one of the Discus, so I removed him. Going to add a smaller one in a week or so.

Well I realized I dont have nearly enogh money for the 75 so I downsized and bought a 55. Im probably not gunna put an angel in it. Thanks for tyhe info though
