If you have a tight fitting lid, I'd get a school of hatchetfish.

yep almost airtight. how big are they. i've never seen them before.

I'd say Marbled hatchets get about 1.25 to 1.5" and the silvers get about 2".

cool, yep i like those. how many do you think i could fit in a 50G with 2 silver dollars (if they make it through the white spot) and a few plecs?

according to fishbase they reach 3cm
so a school of 30 at least

like all rasboras, boras and microrasboras they are extreamly peaceful.

so not getting them from wildwoods, looks like Terry at wholesale tropicals is going to get some more bussiness lol.
email Terry tjones@xln.co.uk and check he has them in stock and if so ask him to reserve you some. he will do for a week at most.
Tell him Danio2004 (Paul) refered you, I may get some discount next time

I just noticed that fins fur and feathers in Heston have some in stock too ( according to tropical fish finder)

Sorry to read of your mistake Jim.

as for the schooling fish that stay near the top and won't bother others
hmm ok harliquins are ok but a bit common.
how about Trigonostigma hengeli Glowlight rasbora
according to tropical fish finder wildwoods have them in stock,
as do wholesal tropicals.

IMHO they are far better looking than harliquins and they don't get as big which means you can have more of them

Poopoo on you, harlequins rock and are not common at all! :p Just kidding. Of course I'm decidely biased. Mine have a lot more orange than they used to, especially the males. They almost look dyed, but I know they are not. I like the other variety, as well, rasboras are a great schooling fish. Something even smaller is the tiny bridget rasbora, but they are really hard to find. Uber tiny. I would worry more about the BN fry eating them then vis versa!

I have some Boraras brigittae and also Boraras maculatus both are stunning fish.
I didn't mention them in this case as, like you pointed out, they may get eaten and Jim seemed set on getting the common harliquins ( :p ).

No lecture required mate. Sorry about your loss.

In a green/black dominant tank like yours I feel a splash of red would do great justice i.e. Bleeding Heart tetra, Serpae tetra (advertised a semi-aggressive but fine in a decent shoal).

Harlequins are lovely too as suggested but it would be nice to see something a bit different. Wolf's link looks nice but too much silver IMHO that may "clash" with the Dollars.

Hi Jimbooo,
Sorry to hear of your plight, but on a lighter note have you thought about Lampeyes (Aplocheilichthys Normani) the seem to be all the rage now that they are easy to get hold off.

Sorry the photos don't do them justice as there scarce on the web. They look stunning in a shoal with a little bit of a current.

I can vouch for that. Well I haven't kept them myself but I have seen them at Wholesale Tropicals in a tank and they look gorgeous with their bright little eyes

Newbe here was reading your post. Is WHITE SPOT, Ick? Just trying to understand if they are the same?

Yes, Whitespot = ICH (from the parasite called parasite Ichthyophthirius)

eesh you poor thing.

i just wanted to add even though i know you're not gonna go for hatchetfish that they are really really susceptible to whitespot, my shoal of 6 went down to 1 within a week of getting them...

i have common harlequins though and they are indeed a pleasure to watch, i reckon 30 would look great
