Morning all, can anyone help I have had my tank for about a year and I have noticed that several fish have disappeared?? all my Danios, a Guppy and a Platy? is this due to them dieing and the other fish eating them? I have 4 Guppies 2 Platies 5 penguin 2 clown loach some neon tetras and Glowlight Tetras

How big are your loaches currently? They certainly get big enough to finish off a dead fish - not sure if they'll eat live fish, but again, they certainly get big enough to eat guppies and some danios.

Unless they all disappeared at once, they could well have died and been eaten. I had a tetra die while I was out of the house for about three hours, and when I returned, only about half of it was left. At that rate, had it died during the night or while I was at work, I would never have found it. One of my otos did just that - vanished in the night, never found a trace in or around the tank.

Have you ever noticed any white "sticks" in the tank? If they're completely eaten, the spines might be left behind. I've seen them in store tanks several times, usually when there's a bad mix of species in the same display.

They may have jumped, too - danios are certainly good jumpers, and one of my platies hit the lid once, so they should be able to make it out, too. It doesn't take a very big opening, either - the gap around the filter is often enough. Small fish can be hard to find in the carpet, and might not make that much smell, especially if they just get sucked up in the vacuum cleaner before too long. If you have any dry pets, they may have jumped and gotten eaten - my cat sits in front of the tank praying another hatchetfish will find a hole in the hood. He doesn't notice or care that I don't have any left, lol.

Thanks Corleone,
Very helpful, The Clown Loaches are not to big at the moment but thought the reason for the dissapperance might be as you have discribed.

Thanks again.
Chris.
