ive found a company in the uk that make really cheap tanks.simple all glass jobs,no extras.there really cheap and say they "keep costs down so they can sell to us cheap" bit they are so cheap im suspicious.also glas spec seems v thin ie 5foot by 18x12 =10mm base and 6 mm sides 48x18x18=8mm all round 48x18x15 6mm all round.im after a 4x2x2 and they do that in 10mm all round.thought most people do these in 12mm.are these being made to thin or are they pushing the limit of what safe? or am i paranoid! he he!

what is the name of this company?

check out edydis on ebay for custom made tanks that are dirt cheap and they use the correct glass thickness - those you have quoted do seem a little on the thin side.
edydis also deliver and assemble for you in the price I believe

The sides of a tank hold the pressure of the water so the taller the tank the more force the pressure pushing on the glass is, 10mm is fine for tanks up to 24 inches tall and is the standard thickness used, once you go above 24" tall it steps up to 12 and 15mm glass, though some companies will go as high as 28" tall in 10mm.

If the 60x18x12" is 12 tall then 6mm is again standard size for a tank of that height and the 10mm base is there to hold the weight of the volume of water. Tanks up to 15" tall nearly always have the sides built from 6mm but long/wide tanks will have thicker bases to support the weight of the water. Tanks above 180 gallons in volume will usually have 20mm bases regardless of their height.

If you want a big tank on a budget always go for a long wide but shallow tank, a 72x30x15" gives you around 140 gallons of water but a wider foot print than a 6x2x2 (180g) tank at a fraction of the cost.

I'll keep that one in mind :D

don't they also make cabinets? I asked for a quote on a tank + cabinet. The tank was cheap £30 but the cabinet was like £250 or so... I was shocked... so now just looking for a regular second hand tank and stand...

If the cabinets are hand made, I can well believe the price of them - plus it looks like all their stands are solid wood and not mdf so that definately would push the price up of their stands.

I cannot find edydis anywhere on ebay or the web. could someone post a link? am after a tank myself.

so an 8ft x 2.5ft x 2ft tank made from 12mm and 25mm glass built on site and costing £590 is not cheap.
well looking at the cost of other tanks around I think thats cheap.

check out there shop on ebay and you'll see lots of other tanks which are much cheaper

thats' over a thousand dollars in us money:| , lol.. i can get one at petsmart cheaper:D

It doesnt really work like that, what you pay for something in dollars we usually end up paying the same figure for in pounds so thats like being able to buy a 300 gallon for $590.

Thats why we get such a great deal on currency exchange if we visit the US, its almost 2 for 1 so everything seems half price to us, but it must be a nasty shock the otherway around for US citizens visiting England, a thousand dollars spending money is suddenly not even enough to have a nice dinner every night for a week :/
