Hi, I have kept fighters before and bred them but always in a tank with lighting and a little heat at about 22[sup]o[/sup]c, but this year for fathers day I got a dinky little glass cube prob about 2litre with novelty gravel and a male and female fighter, they sit on my window sill not in direct sunlight but they seem unhappy, the female spends most of the time on the bottom and the male seems to be going down hill, I change the water regularly but because its so small I end up changing pretty much all of it, what am I doing wrong?
I thought the dinky cube would be good as no filter would mean they might breed as the surface would be still but I'm thinking it looks a bit cruel now? Funny thing is in my local aquatics store they had fighters in these dinky cubes all over the shop and they looked happy.

of course they are unhappy, you;d be miserable if you were stuffed in a small wardrobe!

If you have kept bettas before, you'd know the rule of thumb about keeping both sexes together. OK, some of us have females and a male together but we've got them in tanks over 100ltrs in size but a 2ltr, not fair on them. Being stressed and in a cramped condition, they will not breed.

I would suggest getting a major tank upgrade with adequate heating and filtration or rehoming both or 1.

Bettas should be in at least 26-27c heated.

After all, if you were stuck in a wardrobe with a wife 24/7, wouldn't you be glum

Funny thing is I bred fighters in a 24litre so you dont need 100litres and why were the same tanks housing fighters in Swallow Aquatics doing fine?

They will do better seperated, and in at least 3 gallons each. if you didn't want help or to listen to advice why did you ask?

Unfortunately, you have shown a lack of knowledge with the simple fact that you have a M and F in a 2ltr. Just because you bred in a 24ltr, doesn't mean it's ok to keep them in a 2ltr, if you don't want advice from people 'in the know', then why bother asking.

Breeding and keeping are 2 separate stages, I would recommend you research bettas and take both bettas back to a lfs, if you are unwilling to change their situation.

Bettas in shops are there on a temp basis and not on a perm basis. LFS are not the best place to attain fish keeping knowledge from, forums such as this are.

Either take the friendly advise you have asked for or don't, your choice.

keeping both in a 2ltr together is lit. abuse imo

My boy goes in a 3 gallon container when he gets cleaned and he sulks then!

I dont know how 2 manage to fit in really.

Anyway as people have said they need to be moved asap.

point made folks. im closing the topic. The OP can take or leave the advice above.
cheers
