i have just bought a fluval duo deep 800 which i will be putting in the place of my 4 foot tank, thats the easy bit, im using the plants sand and the rest of the bits in the tank but how do i go about swapping all the bits over as i need to put the new tank in the old tanks place and have no holding tank apart from my tank with oscar in and dont think the community fish will last long in his tank
so what is the best and quickest way to swap it all as im stuck

wouldn't be very quick, but empty some of the old tankwater into the new tank, then empty the old tank but keep some water to put back in and move it then you can put the water back in, move the fish back in then move the new tank to where the old tank is, set it up then put the fish in.

Dont know if it is the best way although it is about the only way i can think of doing it.

when i did it

i emptied a lot of the water out of the old tank
SAVES moving a tank with water in - this is a risk as can in some cases crack the tank

took all the ornaments / bogwood out - plants out (into tank water - bucket / container)
caught the fish - put them in a plastic dustbin - (new cleaned with boiling water before hand) with the filter running
drained the tank completely
took the sand out into another bucket to give it a quick rinse - sometimes sand will get a smell (luckily mine didnt) when disturbed and needs a rinse before going back in the new tank
then moved the old tank and put the new one in place

then put the sand back in , planted the plants and bogwood back in
added water (nice fresh 90% new water - put 4 heater in and was up to temp in about 2 hours- this way gives you time to fiddle around where you want things to go while its warming up
gently caught the fish with jugs ( so not too much netting them)
add the old filter
the gently poured the water from the bin or bucket into the tank with any remaining fish in - some fish just dont want to be caught so saves stressing them too much
then topped up again with water

all worked well with no ammonia spikes or anything - fish settled in right away

well decided to keep both tanks in th living room and put the new tank in another place
here it is all planted and running wth the fish in
