rigged up Co2 on my 10g this weekendm, working fine but the diffusors really noisy! it's a ceramic plate type one but a bit o a low budget version that came free with a Co2 kit Ian got a while back.

was just looking for a nice quiet one, are the ceramic plate type ones good to go for? I really like the look of the spiral type ones, but obviously if they're naff there's no point!!

so can anyone recommend a diffusor thats small, quiet and looks nice. wouldn't say money's no object whatsoever but don't feel restricted to the cheapest of the cheap.

Forget the PM ;)

I find both my ceramic diffusers to be a bit noisy, nature of the beast I think. But they are very effective. Think the spiral glass diffuser would be to big for your tank.

Sam

EDIT - I've got this one and I know it works ok on yeast CO2. But you can still hear it bubbling away.

hmmm it's odd, we've similar in Ian's tank and that's right next to the sofa but you never hear it

I assume the spiral ones work similarly to the ladders... just look a bit nicer?!

so aside from ceramic ones and spiral/ladder type ones, are there other options for Co2 diffusion?

Direct into the filter or an external reactor, both of which I wouldn't think would be suitable on your small tank.

Could you not just get another one like the one Ian uses?

nah the filters a trickle system built into the hood so i imagine that wouldn't work for Co2 diffusion, too much air contact with the water.

i could well do, thinking about it though his tanks in the living room where there's 3 tanks running including the marine tank which is really bloody noisy, also as it's the living room the tv's on half the time as well, so in all liklehood the noise of the diffusors is probably drowned out in there, whereas this tank is on my bedside table so obviously the noise is much more obvious and disruptive.

think i'll probably just try that mini diffusor you linked too and see if that's any better.

If you mean the spiral within the ceramic diffuser, then they are only effective as a bubble counter. The sales pitch for them is that the CO2 going through the spiral is in contact with the water longer, giving better diffusion. This is all a bit of a pointless exercise because the water inside the diffuser is trapped in there and doesn`t diffuse out in to the tank.

I use a Dymax 103 which is nice and quiet, but I also swap it around during cleaning with a Spio V. The Spio V makes it sound like there is a bunch of crickets chirping in the background, a bit like when you are on holiday necking the Sangria of an evening.

Dave.

yyeah i thought that about the spiral ones within the ceramic diffusor! there's spiral ones that go directly in your tank too (unless i've got the wrong end of the stick on how they work, which is entirley possible) like this one http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...roducts_id=1271

this the one you use? http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...products_id=500

lol that's got a spiral in, you just said they're pointless!

lol, crickets is a very good description of what mine sounds like, so it is possible to get oen that doesn't sound like that then! phew :D

I always wondered if the spiral in the ceramic ones ever actually did anything as I thought the water inside was trapped. Now I know, cheers Dave.

I like the other spiral one Alice, would think it'd be much quieter as well. Works in the same way as the ladder type ones.

Sam

it does look pretty and i'm sure it'd be quieter. not sure on 2 counts though

1 - maybe a bit big for my tank, need to go look at the tank with a ruler to see the size in comparison i think

2 - i've got fairly strong flow mostly across the back wall but pretty decent flow all round the tank, would the bubbles just get blown out of the diffusor?

We live and learn. I didn`t realise until I had seen it in operation that this idea wouldn`t work.

The one you have linked to is the same as mine, but I dare say you can get one exactly the same and it may make a noise.

ha ha fair enough

thanks for the help Dave, and you as ever Sam. Much appreciated! :good:

To be fair there is still quite a bit of 'try and see' going on in the UK. All this equipment is still fairly new and new stuff is arriving all the time. Someone eventually has to try a bit of kit and see. Thats why I tried the cheapo osram T5 light tubes, turns out they are not as good as I had hoped but at least now I know.

fair enough, i'll have a little think tonight :good:

the spiro one will fit into the tank. if its only 1" in diameter then it shouldn`t be to ugly in the tank

7" tall would be my concern more than it being 1" across.

do you know what i mean about the bubbles getting knocked out of it by the water flow, think it'd be a problem?
