Hi,

For my up and coming setup, I was thinking of adding a DIY CO2 setup to it (yeast and sugar in an empty bottle). I'm going to be running an Eheim ecco 2234 external filter....I was thinking that a good way to diffuse the CO2 would be to feed the CO2 directly to the inlet of the filter.....this should provide excellent opportunity for the CO2 to diffuse...in theory.

I was wondering if anyone had tried this.

There is also the possiblity that this could somehow adversly affect the filtration by starving the bacteria of oxygen.....also having gas in the filter might also reduce the turnover of water.

Any thoughts?

It works very well. :)

No flow or nitrifying bacteria issues in my experience. The only "negatives" you may have are a slight noise as the bubbles enter the filter and an occasional “burp” of micro-bubbles, which in itself is not a bad thing at all.

George,

How have you done this....just have the airline tubing from the bottle going straight into the intake? I wouldn't want to restrict the water flow too much and would be worried that this may happen.

Yes. I drilled a 6mm hole into the intake strainer and inserted the hose. Minimal flow restriction in my Fluval 204.

It's wise to clean the hose end occasionally as it can ge covered in gunk but it's less maintenance than cleaning a ladder or similar type diffuser.

Don't forget to use a check valve. You wouldn't want any of the yeast/water/sugar mixture in your filter...
