I will get cherry shrimp when my tank is cycled and would quite like another species of shrimp in there with them. Are there any that can live in harmony with the cherry shrimp and also will not/cannot interbreed with them ?

Sorry for so many questions, i try looking online but answers to very specific questions can be difficult to find.

thanks

Yes, Crystal red shrimp, amano shrimp, ghost shrimp.

As above, Amano are perfectly fine with them, I have Amanos and Fire Reds and they are very happy together.

Haven't had either of them long enough to notice any breeding at all, but, Neocaridina (Fire Red Cherry) will not interbreed with Caridina (Amano).

Besides, you'd have to have slightly salty water for any baby shrimplets to survive anyway!

Never knew that. Does this mean it will not be possible to breed shrimp in my tank with guppies ? What method do you use to make the water salty ? amounts per litre etc ?

Are guppies ok with slighly salty water ?

Every answer leads to a host of new questions !!! lol

The salty comment would have been in relation to the Amano shrimp. Cherry shrimp (neocaridina) breed just fine in pure fresh water. Guppies can handle hard water but I have also kept and keep soft water guppies so they are also fine with cherry shrimp.
The only problem you might have with guppies with cherry shrimp is the guppies will eat the young shrimp, while they tend to leave the adult shrimp alone.

Yes, sorry, I should have been more specific! Also meant to say, the cherry variety breed quite readily.

I think this has basically been said (or linked), but I think the basic rule is that shrimp from different genera will not interbreed.

Cherry shrimp can breed with snowball shrimp and blue pearl shrimp. But the offspring aren't colorful.
