I live in Newfoundland, Canada and have been keeping Rosey Reds and Goldfish in my garden pond for some years now and they all over winter fine, even breed for that matter. But I was wondering are there any other cold water fish that might stand a chance of surviving a winter in a pond. My pond does freeze with about 3-4" of ice on the surface, I'm not sure what the water temp. would be under the ice, but I would be thinking around 5C maybe. We do not get very cold winters here though, maybe dropping to -10C over night. Thanks for the help.

How big is the pond? If its quite deep you might get away with tench as they stay near the bottom they shouldnt have any problem with the to freezing.

Yeah i think tench would do fine in that then. You might even get away with carp or perch if you can find them. perch are predators though so not sure if you would want them.

Fish survives so you could probably do sunfish and most other native fish in your pond also I've had koi live in frozen water maybe a foot deep and in a pond no bigger then a kiddie pool
