Just wondering if anyone has any experience with diamond tetra's.

Understand that they can be a bit nippy if kept in too small a shoal. Wondering about keeping perhaps 10 in a group, and whether that would do the trick?

Also wondering how big they grow to? There seems to be a number of different sizes quoted in the books and online.

How did they feed, and what on, is another area of info I'm looking for.

Thanks

Steve

I have five diamond tetras. I started with six but I'm afraid I lost one last week, I have no idea why, it just separated from the group and the following day it was dead; the group of five seem to be OK though. They swim in a loose shoal and occasionally separate to examine different parts of the tank.

I have had them for about four months now and they have grown to be about 1 inch long and I really don't expect much more growth TBH. I have seen no nippiness, neither are they attacked by my other fish (six clown loaches, four corys, one BN catfish and a Siamese algae eater plus an indeterminate number of kuhli loaches). In the evening I have a blue light on and it is interesting to see them seem to appear and disappear at random as their sparkly bodies are side-on then not.

I give them flake food, plus occasional frozen brine-shrimp and bloodworm. The bloodworm is mostly for the Clown loaches but everyone eats a few bits. I also have some food which is designed for middle and bottom feeders which goes down well as it sinks very slowly.

A nice fish, pretty, sparkly, easy to keep.

Cheers

Hello there,

I have Diamond Tetras. I started with five, now I have six and I think number seven is currently waiting until he's big enough to join the shoal (they keep breeding but I only ever get the occasional survivor as I never know they've bred until I see a teeny little guy lurking in the plants) I actually got them because I'd never seen them before and I liked their sparkly appearance. I'd been pondering getting Buenos Ares Tetras but heard they can be very nippy and destroyers of plants but I wanted some of the 'bigger' type tetras. The Diamonds are bright and active but very peaceful. I do think they do attack the more feathery type plants. Sometimes the male Diamond chases the others but I suspect that's when they are spawning. I'm really pleased I got them and they are very sparkly indeed and In the right light they have some lovely subtle colours too. I have them in my community tank with Neons, Harlequins, Celebes Rainbows and Corys, oh, and some Amano shrimp and never have any problem.

Mine are probably just over an inch long with nice finnage (except number seven who's about 2mm long). They eat anything I throw in the tank and are fun to watch at feeding time.

So, in short I'd say definitely give them a go.
