Ummm - I'm not sure how to respond as I don't really know what you are trying to do with your sump. There seems to be no area for equipment like heaters, protien skimmer, etc. It seems to be one large filter which you could do with a canister or trickle wet/dry setup.

you might want to look into skimming your water before putting it over bio media. This will help keep it cleaner. good basic idea though.

Yes i know i wanted to do that but i got the sump all ready made up, so i can't really do anything about that :/

Put the skimmer in the first area since that is the area with consistant water flow (which a skimmer needs to have so that it can work well) There is no need for so much filter media, do some searches on sump design or keep drawing up variations so that we can "tweak" the design.

This is a design I knocked up for my new sump:

The first compartment is filled with BioBalls then the main chamber filled with live rock, algae and mangroves instead of a DSB, etc. then the final compartment houses the return pump and skimmer. as its filled with live rock it's not your usual type of sump but the principal is the same.

I guess i can fit the skimmer near the pipes or just where the pipes end, would that be better guys?

IMO you should ditch the filter wool (or at least put is as a final stage filtration). where it is at the moment you'll find it will collect so much crap that you'll be constantly changing it.

Filtration should get finer the further down the filtration process, ie. start with coarse filtration (coral rubble) moving through to filter wool at the end. Filter wool is only really meant for final polishing of the water, not a first stage filter as its too fine and traps everything.

As Superman said the best position for the skimmer is in the area of highest flow and that will be nearest the inlet but as the sump is already made you may be limited so just put it where you can.

I can't really get my head round the sump design you have as the water level will be inline with the filter wool on your diagram, thus making the crushed marble and sulphur flakes near enough redundant (I may be wrong) as they will have no flow through them just over the top.

Have you any photos of the sump?

What type of skimmer are you running? Is it going to work with such a small water level near your return?

Pics would be cool!

It's a resun skimmer have not got it yet. Sorry about pics size guys i don't have a editor.

PICS are below thanks to mr_miagi32
