Hi all,

Does anyone have any tips, or links about determining the value of a fish? (namely bettas). I know that good finnage, clean colouration without red wash is good etc. But what other things should I look out for?

I'm particularly interested in CT's :)

Cheers,
Marty.

P.S. I'm a first time betta buyer, so I need some indication of what i'm doing :)

Kind of a broad question, not sure where to start. I guess lineage is a good thing, possibly ancestors that were in/placed in shows. Clean lines.

If you plan on breeding or showing, then these things are somewhat important. You more than likely will have to search around quite a bit if you plan on buying from a lfs.

What exactly are you personally looking for?

Thanks for the bump Synastic :)

Well, I'm really just looking to buy a nice CT pair for breeding. If I'm faced with a picture of the fish, and the person says righto, $40 please, then how do I know I'm not being ripped off?

That's really what I meant.

Cheers,
Marty :)

It's a gamble buying fish online, I've paid 100+ for a couple of pairs without even seeing a pic, you have to be able to trust your seller.

I only keep bettas as a hobby, but I'll pass along some information I've been told...
Larger fins and good fin quality are traits to look for... a general rule to follow is that the better the fish's fins fit into a perfect circle, the better quality they are (photo samples provided.)
Also, in dark coloured fish, white ventral fin tips are considered a slight flaw if none of the other fins have white tips.

Thanks :)

I'm looking at getting a Black CT male, and a steel blue CT female for breeding... But I'm not sure if this is a good colour combination or not :dunno: Any ideas??

I'm hoping to see a pic of the fish so I can see what they are like :)

If you're wanting to breed melanos, that's the way to go
I have a sibling pair of black orchid crown tails that I ordered from Aquabid.com... I love them so.

Don't get a black female betta, ALL are sterile, don't know why. But if you need black, it's the steel blue female that carries the black gene as a dominant trait.

hi,

the really important question is not the price of the males, it is the price of the females!!!
a good male makes no good sibbling, but a good female and a good male make a good sibbling ;)
and that is why females are traded up to 500.- $

normally, you can be lucky to get a "good" sibbling female, not treated with oestrogen or other substances to make them unfertile...

so better watch out for good females, not only for good males ;)
