Hi All,

I'm setting up a new 6' x 2' x 2' tank.

I already have a 190L tank with the Dennerle Deponit substrate and a substrate heater and a 70L tank with Deponit but no heater. From my observations there doesn't seem to be any difference in the two tanks.

Dennerle, however, maintain that the substrate should only be used with a heater cable to prevent it going anaerobic. Personally, I haven't had a problem in my smaller tank and I think it's just a way to get you to buy a couple of hundred quids worth of equipment.

Anyone else used it without the cable heater without problems?

Brian

In a heavily planted tank substrate heating makes little or no difference to plant growth.

Some anaerobic bacteria is necessary to help convert waste into useable nutrients for the plant roots.

I used to use a heater cable. I won't bother anymore.
