I was wondering is it just the male thats overly territorial? Would it be possible to stock just 3 females?

With Demasoni - the females aren't far behind the males in terms of aggression. Better to get just 1 (M or F) or lots IME - they can be feisty little so and so's.
More general info on them here: [URL="http/www.fishforums.net/content/Cichlids...pheus-Demasoni/"]http

I've always found a single Demasoni does OK in a mixed tank - they will claim their own territory and defend it but if you don't go too over the top with stocking and make plenty of caves etc - that should be OK.
I would avoid any similar looking species like P.Elongatus and many of the Afra genus - Demasoni generally won't tolerate fish of a similar appearance.![]()

Mine gets along grandly with two 3 Afra's, but this just may be lucky, He relelntlessly hated the other demonsi tho, lol...
Yeah thats why I said I may just be lucky, as all these cichlids have a genetic agression then their own personalities righT?.I've always found a single Demasoni does OK in a mixed tank - they will claim their own territory and defend it but if you don't go too over the top with stocking and make plenty of caves etc - that should be OK.

Some Afra's are OK - it completely depends on the specific species. The ones to avoid are the likes of Nkolongwe and Njambe, which are darker in colouration and look more like Demasoni.

Yep - some of them haven't read their profiles telling them how they should behave.![]()
No to my knowledge. Here's a cool one that's actually from Lake Victoria, but that's ok to mix w/some Malawi's:
