Defusing Lights To Create Shady Areas

hi as iv'e been reading up more and more on fish im told its gd to have some shady areas. i do not have this in my tank. is there any gd methods on defusing the light to make shady areas?

A simple method is to use floating plants. I don't use floating plants but do provide lower level seclusion with broad leafed plants until the taller plants like my Vallis mature.
