A few weeks back i had 2 guppies that gave birth to approx 70 fry between them. They are all growing and doing very well. One however seems slightly deformed. Its still growing normally and eating and swimming fine but it has a lump by its anal fin almost like its insides are on the outside  Will it have problems when its older? If it mates is it likely its fry would also be deformed? Any advice greatly appreciated xx

Ditto never breed from poor stock, this leads to problems.

Hi Emma,

Where the hell have ya been?

What i usually do with deformed ones is let them grow as normal and see how they get on, if they do ever get pregnant and drop fry, i have noticed on my previous ones that they tend to gove birth to normal fry and the males what imprgnate also thier young turn out fine.

Im well against killing and feeding deformed fish to larger fish so i just leave them, if it was at a point where they was just becoming loads of deformed ones then i would remover her/him.

Like i say, even with deformed in the past that i have had (nothing major) they have done well and fry off them have been fine.

How bad is the deformaty?

If your are serious about breeding then it will be best all round to just remove it.

I've been on msn but just not on here for a while. How are you??

It looks totally normal other than this lump on its stomach. The lump appears quite large considering how small the fish is. I wouldnt kill it unless it appeared to be really suffering due to the abnormality but it seems fine at the moment. I think ill keep it seperate from the other fish once it gets larger xx

Ive been on msn everyday lately and aint seen ya on, you must have me blocked

I've seen these lumps on livebearers before, they seem to be some kind of cyst. I don't know what causes them but I have seen a few. I rescued one such fish, a female platy that was going to be euthanised because she couldn't be sold in that state. I acutally got some quite nice fry out of her. I did have to put her down in the end because she coudln't swim properly when the lump got very large, but she had about four months with me and she was very happy until the last week or so when it suddenly took off.

If the lump gets gradually larger over time you can probably expect a similar outcome, I've seen a few of these and the owners have all eventually decided to euthanise the fish once the growth started to cause obvious discomfort. But I see no reason to go and kill it off the mark because it could be happy for many months. Or it could be something else entirely that does not grow or even that goes away.
