I did 5 x water changes yesterday and at the moment I'm using buckets but what I used to stop the substrate flying up as I poured the fresh water in was a 'deflector plate' well sort of any way.

I used a piece of old plastic guttering, I placed it in the tank at an angle and rested it on the gravel bottom, then I poured the fresh water in to the gutter so it trickled down, some of the gravel did move at the base of the gutter at first but after that I had no problem.

This could also work if you had a hosepipe I should think, then I thought afterwards if a hook-on type of plate could be made for the same purpose, something that hooks on the side/front of the tank perhaps, but for now I like this idea as it did make it a bit easier.

I do something similar, though I pour my water over my bogwood and it goes down either side gently.
