Well I've finally made the 'big decision' ... I'm gonna start saving up for a brand new tank.

The Rio240 I have was bought 2nd hand from a lovely friend that was giving up fish keeping. Unfortunately after I'd got it set up and full of water I noticed the glass was covered in some pretty ugly deep scratches. I didn't notice them when I bought the tank and so perhaps I scratched it when setting up - impossible to say, but either way the scratches are there and they annoy me.
In the 18 months I've had this tank more scratches have appeared and so I've come to the conclusion this glass scratches way too easily.
Before this tank I had a Rio180 - this was also 2nd hand and was also scratched - but on the outside, not on the inside like my 240.

So my purpose for posting? Well to ask other Juwel tank owners - do Juwel tanks scratch easily or have I just got unlucky?

I'd like to buy another Juwel - I like the build quality (scratched glass aside) and I like the 'look'. Parts are easily accessable in my area aswell - both my favourite lfs stock Juwel tanks. So, thoughts anyone?

And another thing ... If I was to buy another 240 is it a good idea to buy it with it's stand or is re-using the current stand okay? The obvious thing would be possible colour differences as the cabinate may have faded a little over the years

I know some of the Vision lines are acrylic coated glass.  Are the scratches on the inside or outside?

they're on the inside and so are prone to algae growing in the scratch - which is a pain to get out. The scratches are quite deep

Being on the inside, that is definitely the worst.  I have used glass polish on the outside to fix some minor scratches, (tank was out of service) and it worked quite well, but took forever to clean and sterilize the tank to be able to get back in service.  Although Juwels are not readily available in the US, they do look to be very nice tanks.

As far as the craftsmanship is concerned, what shape is the stand in?  I imagine that if it is a high quality stand (not made from OSB) that it will be fine to re-use instead of having to buy another one.  In my case, my 60gal is sitting on a very cheap stand that will need to be replaced.  While it is holding up for now (I even added extra bracing to it), I don't want 800lbs relying on it for too much longer.

I guess it comes down to your situation.  Is there any signs of bowing, warping or stress related fatigue on the stand?

the stand looks fine - no bowing or damage and it is the correct stand for the tank. I'm just wondering if it's better to replace the whole lot or just the tank really.

I bought my Juwel Rekord 800 brand new and that is totally scratch free which is what's confusing. It takes a lot of effort to scratch glass which is why I'm asking questions about new Juwels - perhaps they've changed the design in recent years. I have no idea how old this tank is as I'm no longer in touch with the friend that I got it off.
Perhaps my answer may be on Juwels own website ... I shall go and have a look :)

Thanks anyway :)

I asked today at maidenhead aquatics and they are all glass. They also recommend to buy a new stand with the tank as Juwel often throw in the stand for free. He said if I keep my eye open when I'm ready for the free stand deal then I get a lot for my money.

One check on Juwel's website and they are currently offering the stand for free! Shame I havn't got the cash saved right now!

How much are the jewels out of interest?

Ever looked at custom made? They aren't always as expensive as you would have thought and tend to be alot nicer quality if you go with a decent builder.

a full set up - tank and stand (Rio 240) is around £500 depending on stockist. But if they are throwing in a free cabinate then my guess would be about £300

I've not considered custom made no, I've seen some lovely tanks and cabinates though

Ahhh cant go wrong at £300 really.

If you plan on/forced into spending £500 though id suggest giving ND Aquatics a look. I own several of their tanks and all have been fab.

thanks for the recommendation :D
