i am sure i read somewhere that dechlorinators block the effects of medication in a tank, or some do? Bear with me, i can't remember much more,

For example, doing a water change, using dechlorinator and immediately dosing tank with say Protozin renders a lot / most or even all the protozin in-effective?

However, i am wondering if this is BS?

Surely the meds companies would state it on the bottle? and i cant find anything on internet about this?

Anyone know anything?

Is it just an old wives tale?

Hmm.. I've never heard of that before. I dunno why dechlorinator would have any affect on meds though *shrugs*
I'm sure someone who has heard of this will be able to address this better.

It depends on the water treatment you are using. The ones that state that they neuteralize heavy metals usually use ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid to chelate these sort of things, basically binding them into a harmless form. I imagine it could do the same with some meds, if EDTA is dosed at a high enough rate.

If the water treatment you are using states that it removes chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia with no mention of heavy metals this should not be a problem.

Wiki has some good info on EDTA; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDTA

I learned about its use in dentistry yesterday, while I was having a root canal done. My dentist & I often get into discussions about things such as this, he mentioned the long form, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, to his assistant while I had a mouthfull of equipment, and I was able to say EDTA. He laughed & said either fish or printing, which led to another of our discussions after all the expensive hardware was removed.

thanks Tolak i shall take a look at the link

but who would bother using water treatments that DONT detoxify heavy metals? I've never seen one (and i have used a lot) that treats for chlorine but NOT heavy metals, although i am sure they exist some where
