One of my 30g seems to be cursed. My gups seem to have TB. They are getting thin and then passing away. My clown loaches have ick. My angel has this whitish sheen to her (she’s black). My otos seem ok. Checked water specs and the ph was low-6.4. I’m not sure why. The only thing I can think of is that I wasn’t running my air stone at night and maybe there’s been a CO2 build up. I started doing daily water changes yesterday. Will do maybe 40% a day till the ick clears up. I’ve added a bit of salt-1 tbsp per 5 gallons. I’ve cover the tank and removed most of the plants.
I think I may have had a faulty heater as the tank went through great temp fluctuations the past week or so. I know that clowns and otos shouldn’t have salt but it’s really not very much. After checking out some scaleless ick med I noticed it has Na in it anyway.
I also have hooked up the UV sterilizer hoping that will help some.
Any other ideas of what can be wrong?
thanks

Can you post test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph,what does it look like when the gups go to the toilet,is the whitish sheen between the sclales and all over the body.

Well I tried getting some pics but it just doesn’t show up. Yesterday the angel had clamped fins and was hanging out at the bottom of the tank and today she’s fanned out in all her glory. The white sheen is still there a little bit. It doesn’t look like cotton or any kind of fungus I’ve ever seen. It looks like a small film of smoke is on part of her body. You know when you see smoke trailing from a cig? It’s weird. Any way, I’ve lost a few gups (two were new) and one I’ve had for awhile. I’ve had two other gups in the past six months die from what looked like wasting disease.
Specs- ammonia-0
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate-between 5 and 10 ppm
Ph is now between 7 and 7.2.

One of the gups I noticed had white poop and othes with big normal looking poo. Think I will soak their food in garlic juice tomorrow. Don't think I should feed them today. None took food yesterday.

You will need a gill and body scrape as it could be parasites.check water in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph slime symtoms are also heavy breathing, rubbing and flashing, and lethargy.

Did you quarantine the new gups? They're usually not kept in the best condition at the LFS,perhaps they brought something home with them?

None took food yesterday
Surprising. They're definitely not well. A 40% water change is good but don't be scared to go heftier. I'd do at least a 70 (with little gravel disturbance to keep your tank balanced, not sure how established your tank is)

I didn’t quarantine the new gups cuz I’m bad and lazy. This all started when I first brought a clown home. My cat knocked over the bucket I was acclimating him in and I found him on the floor so I was afraid he’d get ick. Then the temp in this tank plunged because my buildings temp has been up and down, plus I think the heater is piece of garbage and I’m going to buy a new one today. I’ll do another massive water change tonight. The tank has been running for at least six months maybe more. Do you think the salt level I have will be ok for the clowns and otos?

You shouldn't be using salt with clowns as they are a scaless fish, how much salt have you got in the tank.

i put in a 1 tbsp per 5 gallons. I visited a bunch of websites on clown loaches and found quite a few old timers who have used low salt levels. Plus on some ick meds I found for scaleless fish had sodium in it which I'm sure was diluted but salt none the less. Do you think I should remove it?

How are the clown acting, I think I would dilute it down abit.

Actually I've been peaking under the towl from time to time and they have been wondering around or they are lined up under the hose from the uv sterilizer, kind of like swimming in the stream.

Towel aay? Whatcha got going on over there? :shifty:

While you're at the lfs look to see if they have some kind of frozen food they'll like. The wider the diet.the healthier the fish. Sorry but I'm just convinced that your fish can handle/resist just about anything as long as they eat properly.

I think that trace amount of salt will be fine until you do your water change tonight. Be extremely gentle if you add more this evening. Also look for a liquid vitamin or some sort of beneficial water additive. I'd highly, highly recommend Amazon Rain if your lfs carries it.

You’re cracking me up wuv. I have a towel covering the tank because a lack of light is supposed to do something to the ick. They need light to live or reproduce, I don’t know.

I hate using meds so I’m trying the natural approach. I try to mix up their diet but maybe their sick of this flake. I give them pellets, wafers, regular flake, spirulina flake, dried worms, ect. Though they always seem to like the reg flake the best. Though I haven’t fed them peas in awhile and I know that I should. None of them touched my zucchini last week.

I will look for the items you mentioned. Do you think this is enough salt to kill the ick or should I just put a med in there?

meh, I hate meds too. I swear by a product called colloidal silver. It's from a health food store though, you won't find it in any lfs.
Here's an informative link, no mention of fish but I can promise you it will cure anything that ails a fish. I've used it directly in my tanks and it has no ill reactions on your bio-filter because it only attacks bad bacteria.

If you're interested and ready to shell out at least 10 bucks, get some. But get nothing less than 500 PPM for the best results. That's the only thing I ever treat my fish with, which isn't often because my fish are never sick thanks to silver (and being bratty frozen food eaters ) But I do use it regularly as an immune booster.
A couple of years ago I had guppies who broke out with ich and it disappeared overnight when I gave them silver.

Also, ditch the freeze dried foods. I honestly believe these are the root of many, many fishkeepers problems. They're notorius for harboring parasites and bacteria.

The Amazon Rain won't cure anything but it will boost immunity and add vitamins and natural disease fighting bacteria to the water.
