hi, I have a new 2ft tank cant convert in to gallons but it took 6.5 buckets to fill which would be 65ltrs :S
i have had the tank set up for a week cycling , every thing was going fine and i tested the water it was good to go so put in my small hex 7.5 gal set up fish which are:
3 mollies,3 zebra danios,3silver tips , and 6 cardinal neon tetras one ive had for years and 5 tiny newbies
last night i thought ide have a casualty as one of the danios was on the bottom not too happy he didnt do anything even when he was bugged by one or two of his tank mates they wherent attacking him just nudging him with the tails( unless thats part of attacking him) this morning expecting to find a floating danio i found all but the danios who where hogging the tacky divers helmet ornament thing (4yr old chose it) gasping at the top and 2 dead neons at the bottom one being my big neon! :shout: .Ok i guess this wont come as a suprise to any of you as you all have far more experience tham me, but what did i do wrong? i couldnt bare the thought of having my babies in bad water or with bad tank mates so chose all carefuly, would it of been the danios picking off the neons? the couloration of the neons are fine they are bright and the other 4 are fine .
the other concideration is my kids, i have this tank upstairs on the landing as a relaxing aid for my 16 yr old autistic son so he can look at it of a night help him to sleep he wouldnt touch them but wouldnt put it past my 14 yr old autistic daughter i have a lock on the lid she could get past if she tryed i have no food up there as the lot owould be emptied in or fish eqiupment at all .
all thats in the tank with them is 2 lumps of rock from my big tank the heater and te filter (Rena, never had this type befor it sounds like a drain with the air hose attatched)

The tank isn't cycled.
Get a mature filter sponge from your other tank & cut it to fit in the new tank's filter - put the one out of the new tank in the Juwel stack.
Do a 20% water change too -just add dechlorinatoer.

hi
as said a week is not long enough for a tank to cycle. whilst testing the water when cycling you should have got an ammonia spike which gradually came down did you see this??
can you post your water params (ie: ammonia, nitrite, nitrate,pH levels).
the fish sound like they are suffering from new tank syndrome. id follow the advice given by diademhill above & also have a read of the advice pinned in the beginners section of this forum, good advice about cycling etc.
good luck

Sounds a lot like new tank syndrone, this link will explain all and how to treat it as well;

There is also a wealth of other articles pinned in the beginner section which may also be of some help :good: . You need to buy a test kit for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates (the strip test ones are not very accurate, the test tube ones are much better) and post the results here ASAP  .
For now i would do a 40% water change with dechlorinator/water conditioner and make sure there are no more dead fish in the tank, also make sure there is not uneaten food too. Increasing aeration will help too, does the tank have a filter and heater (what temp is the tank) and do you have any dechlorinator/water condtioner?

right just done the water specs and they are
0 for everything accept ph which is 7.6
done a 50% water change and added more aireation and a new filter which dont sound like a drain and have put in a filter sponge from my big tank cut to size.
surviving fish are 3 mollies and the Danios who up to now are fine. :look:
does this sound ok , will it get any worse ?

I would keep testing the water quality once a day as the tank is new and this is when the water quality is least stable- if you see any ammonia or nitrites, do a 30% water change with dechlorinator as either of these substances are a real drain on fishs health and can easily kill them.
No nitrates indicate the tank is cycling, but as long as you do regular water changes and water quality testings and avoid overly cleaning the filter (if you do need to clean it, just rinse off the worst of teh gunk in water from water changes, as cleaning it in undechlorinated water or overly cleaning it can make it cycle all over again), you will be fine :good: .

You must keep a close eye on your fishes health particually at this critical stage in your tanks maturing as stress from unstable water quality is one of the no.1 causes of illness in fish. Symptoms can be either behavioral (like hanging around on its own not doing anything, not eating, body shaking, fish gasping etc etc) or physical (cotton or slime-like growths, eroded mouth or fins, white spots on body, white/stringy poop or inflamed anus etc etc) and are bad signs something is not right with the fish.

Feeding a varied diet according to each fish types specifications wil help improve general health and resistance against desease- mollies and danio's are omnivores so a bit of everything in their diet is good :) .
Apart from your standard fish flakes, you can get foods like bloodworms, daphinia and krill from your lfs (local fish store) and other fish foods like TetraPro vegetable flakes (veg is important particually for mollies) and algae wafers too  .

thanks for that, the food i use are aquarian tropical flakes, sera flake and the mollies are fond of nishi aquaria sinking pellets i some times use the aquarian fish treats and the odd bit of cucumber and of corse when i can get hold of them the live food and have freeze dried tubifix worm cubes .ive tryed the frozen stuff its ok but looks horrible and my mum go's balistic when if she catches sight of it in the freezer( in a sealed container) when she visits
as for the cleaning of filter sponges well i take a half bucket of water out the tank and squeese them in it i dont rinse under taps lincolnshire has horrible water full of scale so much so you could almost slice it:-(
