Hello

I have cycled a 24 ltr tank for almost two months, last week i added 3 Guppies (all male) 3 neons and a couple of snails!
I noticed at the weekend one of the Guppies was gasping at the surface, after testing the water the Amonia was 0, but the Nitrite had shot up to 5.0, the worst one!
On the advice of the web (not this site) i did an 80% change yesterday, this morning one of my Guppies has died and another is now gasping at the surface. I have increased the air flow to max (is this ok??) as i understand Nitrite poisoning causes rapid gill movement due to lack of oxygen.
If i check again and still have a Nitrite reading, do i do another huge change or a partial?
Also i have ordered some Aquariam Salt as have been told this may help.
I should add i added 3 males, one of which has turned out to be female as there are also three babies in there now too.

i think you are doing all you can right now, just keep on eye on the water parameters, if the nitrite reading is still very high then do another water change but not so much I would do a 50% water change.

Can you think of anything that may have caused the spike?

Hi thanks i cant think of anything apart from the 3 babies.

How did you cycle the tank?

The tanks overstocked. None of the fish you keep should be in that size tank.
Livebeares are active fish so need no less than 10 gals, same for the neons.

You can use household salt its one tablespoon to 5 gal. But best to add it gradually.

Increase aeration and water changes.
