Hi,

Found a dead cichlid on Monday in the tank at the top with its mouth wide open  , so we removed the fish and put into a container to take back to the shop as they don't open Monday or Tuesday (only had it since friday). Looked in my tank this afternoon to see if the other cichlid was doing ok only to find a batch of eggs  over by the coconut house and surrounding area, the other cichlid in the tank wasn't bothered by the eggs just left them alone.

We took the eggs out as they were abandoned it seem like and were dead.

Could the cichlid have died due to giving birth to dead eggs or did it die and the eggs just came out maybe? It's mouth really was wide open (tunnel like for a fish).

Do i need to remove whats left of the eggs as the other fish doesn't seem to have eaten them already.

Any help or guidence etc would be of help to me.

Thank you

Jemma

This has me flumoxed I do not know how breeding affects fish negatively. In my experience an open mouthed dead fish means it was deprived of oxygen before death or a parasitic infection but that isn't necesarilly the case in your instance. Is the tank well oxygenated?

Wilder will be around tomorrow evening ish so she will be able to help you more than I can!!!

Might be worth posting this in the cichlid section they might know a bit better there.

You've not had much luck with your tanks lately have you? :(

The main tank no and Cichild tank no. I have 2 hang on filters that create oxgyen, an 18inch air stone, and also the under gravel cleaner that creates oygyen and a Bio foam filter so i think lack of Oxgyen wouldnt not be the case there.

And the other fish that lives in there is still swimming around all nice and happy, we did a water test and it come back normal like it should be. I just guess im having a bad luck run.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Wide open mouth can mean something lodged in the mouth, sore or ulcer in the mouth, injury.

Size of tank - just under 100 litre
Number of Fish - Was 2 now 1
Water Stats:

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate 10-20ppm
PH - 7.5

The type of fish was peacock cichilds we only had 2 in that size tank due to the size and to see how it went with keeping etc. When you say somethink in mouth when you look at the fish in the tub of water we have it in (its dead) it still had some jellied strands coming out.

Did it look like food, parasites like worms, cotton threads.
What did the gills look like.

Ok.
Not sure what the fish died off.
Have you posted in the cichlid part of the forum.

What you saw in her mouth may have been more eggs, peacocks are mouth brooders so it sounds like she spit the eggs you found in the tank shortly before she died. You might as well remove the other eggs in the tank as they won't hatch without being tumbled.

I have no clue what killed her either, I'm assuming there were no signs that her tankmate attacked her.
