I first noticed some damage to his dorsal fin on 3rd jan when putting photos up, there was a small hole in his fin, not a tear, but a small hole surrounded by intact fin. i thought it was a bit odd, but put some melafix in to treat it and have been doing regular water changes, (even though the tank has a fully cycled filter running on it) and as i said treating with melafix, but its getting worse and has definitely turned into finrot now and there is a small tear in the end of his tail, so i have taken him out of the divided tank and got him back in his old tank (15L filtered, heated tank)
he's really active still, eating fine and seems totally unconcerned by holes just randomly appearing in his fins.
i tested the water today and have 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 5 nitrates ph between 7.5-8

so first of all, what should i do? keep treating with melafix? or try something else?

and secondly, what could have caused it? why would holes just suddenly appear in his fins? could it be caused by stress from having the others so close?
levi and comet are both perfectly fine, no signs of any problems at all.

Hi,ive had bettas have holes in fins before, what ou could try is some ial in his tank and add some salt.Salt is a good cure for most things :good: aquarium salt that is.

hi hoddy, thanks for the advice

i don't have any aquarium salt but i do have some IAL so i've added that, keeping my fingers crossed and will pick up some aquarium salt as soon as i can get to a fish shop, but i don't have any transport so that might not be until next weekend, so hopefully he will be ok in the meantime

How powerful is the filter? I ask because one of my boys is in a 10 Gall on his own, he had little pinprick holes in his tail.. Did some research and found that this can happen if they have to swim too hard... Turned his filter down to minimum (has a spray bar directed at the glass too) Added salt and bingo, no more holes... He also builds bubble nests on a regular basis now. :good:

it's quite a powerful filter a fluval 204, but the flow is turned down to pretty much the minimum it can go, it also has a spray bar pointed at the glass, the filter sucks water out from the right hand section and returns it to the left hand section. the dividers have multiple holes in them so the water can flow through between the 3 sections. the water surface is perfectly still in the central section so there cant be that much disruption and dazzle has been kept in a filtered tank from day 1 (admittedly not this particular filter)

what i was wondering was if it was something to do with having the other males around? when he is flaring he has a tendency to swim around like a maniac at high speeds. maybe this is having the same effect as having to swim too hard?

the thing with sd/hm's is that they can only flsre for a certain amount of time a day.If they are at fulll flare for a long period of time then the fins have a tendancy to split.Maybe its worth putting some plants in the way of the dividers? just a thought.

hmm, or maybe i can buy another betta to go in the middle slot and keep dazzle in his separate tank on his own?

now i just have to persuade the boyfriend!

His poor tail :-(

P.s the damage is only the 2 bits at the top, his tail is all scalloped along the edge anyway and the deep scallops towards the bottom were already there.

i was wondering, could i use sea salt (culinary) in his tank?

its coarse ground so has no added ingredients to make it free flowing or anything, i'd need to get it dissolved in hot water or something and then dilute it down and add it.

but would this be ok? or is aquarium salt something totally different?

ibble all you need is myxacin (sp) treat over 5 days, the damaged part will start to seperate from the tail and fall off, heal and growth will be seen in about 3 weeks after, i use this to treat finrot and it works every time. pop into the shop when you can and see the improvement on my rosatail since he developed it after spawning with a difficult female, you wont believe the improvement, if i had pics i would show you the after shot but aint got one until tomorrow,

ok modaz, have found some myxazin in the fish cupboard and dosed with that.

it says treat on days 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 should i do a 100% water change with fresh meds everyday? or just change some of the water and add more meds?

sorry for the fuss, but you know what i'm like for worrying over my fish!

no dont do any water changes for 5 days. they will be fine without the changes
