Dawns Again! And Dwarf Chain Loaches

Can't resist asking questions now I've joined. Guess a lot of you aren't familiar with dawn tetras - and I don't recommend them! I'd attach a picture to enlighten you, but I don't know how. They're very pretty with a yellowy green sheen and startling black and white markings on the fins.

The dawns have attacked practically every fish I've tried keeping them with, except the koi angels (who are still trying but failing to lunch on them) - and the two ottos in the tank, which are completely impervious to attack - they just ignore the dive bombing dawns.

I saw some dwarf chain loaches in a lfs last week. Apart from being horribly expensive - does anyone know whether, if I got five of them, they would act the same way as the ottos and ignore the pesky little dawns? Or are they sensitive critters? The tank has black gravel in it so probably not suitable for corys.

Do Dawn tetra's have any other names? I can't find any other information on them?

I don't know anything about "Dawn Tetras", but I do about Dwarf Chain Loaches (Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki - previously Botia Sidthimunki. So if you can clarify Dawn Tetras, perhaps I could help

Edit: Are they Aphyocharax paraguayensis ? If so, sorry I don't know anything about them

It does however say this about them:

But the aquarist should be forewarned: This is an intimidating fish.

So it seems like this fish belongs in a species tank.

So you might want to consider this as a priority.

Aphyocharax paraguayensis is not, apparently the most up-to-date name. They are now Hyphessobrycon eos (with thanks to The Wolf). I do have pictures - but haven't a clue how to post them - sorry (this is only my first week).


Sorry to say that I have given up on the dawns (just goes to prove that impulse buys are a BAD thing). I think pretty but vicious sums them up. A fellow aquarist locally has agreed to take them and give them a tank of their own. I'm absolutely..... definitely...... not (well at least for now) .... having more than six tanks!

I have another problem now. Because of all the re-arrangements to try and accomodate the dawns, I have a pair of little golden rams in with two Koi Angels. Gilbert the little male (that answers whether I name my fish or not!) keeps picking a fight with Tweedledum the largest angel. I think Tweedledum was just completely astonished at first - but he's going to retaliate. Will they sort it out - or should I separate them.

The books say that rams are delicate and nervous little fish!! Well these two aren't. Perhaps there's something in the water here!

Sorry to say that I have given up on the dawns

I'm soryy to hear that, but I can't blame you
they really are a nasty little fish.
Rest easy on the thought that they will live a full and
content life in their own tank.


maybe one day you'll be in a position to try them again.
