One of my tanks (34l) is dedicated to having one fighter in but also something else (I like my tanks to be slightly overstocked). One of the entries in October's FOTM comp was the peacock goby - the colours of the photo in the entry were lovely. Did some research, including this forum, Seriously Fish, Tropical Fish Finder, and a specialist goby forum - all said that the peacock goby was peaceful, suitable for any community aquarium, no worries about fin nipping.

So having lost my last fighter, I decided to move out the Limia Tridens into my main tank, and replace them with 4 gobies and a new fighter. Gobies first, I thought, in case the fighter wants to be a bit territorial. THe gobies have been in 10 days, and on Tuesday I brought home my new fighter.

Observing the tank at feeding time yesterday, and, contrary to all the research, the larger male goby is having a couple of nips at the fighter. Obviously, I'm not prepared, having spent more on this new fighter than I ever have on any single fish previously, I don't want him being bullied, so I move all 4 gobies into the main tank.

Which leaves me with a 34l tank, with 1 fighter, 2 hillstream loaches and 2 amano shrimp. Yes, I know the loaches prefer a totally different set-up to a fighter, but I seem to have found a compromise set-up which seems to suit both - the loaches are very active, so I'm assuming from this that the oxygenation levels are fine.

What I'm asking for is some ideas on what else, that's nice and colourful, above all PEACEFUL!!!!, that will fit in my tank.

My initial thoughts would be some male endlers, perhaps a couple of platies, maybe some Heterandria Formosa, although these aren't too colourful.

But suggestions, please.

How about some species of Killifish? I've never seen many in LFS but there small, peaceful and colourful, I especially like the Gardneri.

Let me get this straight, you had 2 hillstream loaches, 4 gobies and 1 fighter and some shrimp in 34ltrs of water? Far be it from me as I'm no expert, but that sounds cramped? Especially with a fighter in the mix.

:D

I have endlers in with my male betta, and although he;s nothing special in the looks department they get on well. He also has about 10 chilli/mosquito rasbora in with him.

I've kept platies with him too in the past and no problems. I just recently bought some Norman's lampeyes which are sooooo cute - no idea on the fin nipping though as they aren't kept together.

Male black bar endlers in with mine at moment and all is going swimmingly. Nice contrast in colours and NO fin nipping.

Lol @ tizer.

Chili rasboras, and celestial pearl danios are tiny, these would definately by preferable, although they're quite skittish/shy so could still fin nip/be subject to bullying.

I personally don't think so, I never go by the inch per gallon thing anyway, the filtration will cope, water changes are regular, and there's plenty of space for everyone. None of those species needs extra room, in the way a Danio would.

You're so helpful.....

Don't encourage him, for heavens' sake.......

I think 20 Galaxy Rasboras is a tad OTT, but in all seriousness, what is there in nice brightly coloured micro-rasbora species that I could have 6-8 of?

If it's colour you want, then look into Chilli Rasbora. Although they are, as was said, very skittish.. their colours are fantastic, as well as this they are quite readily available in alot of LFS.

Quick question.. why would 20 Galaky look OTT ? The more of these type of fish you can have then the better they would look. My Chilli's CONSTANTLY live in and amongst my plants, they love cover in the same way a Dwarf Gourami would, but when they do all come together it's a beautiful thing ( )

Terry.

Only because it's a 34l tank, and 20 of them would, I think, be too much. In a bigger tank, yeah, no problem. And THANK YOU for a sensible answer, unlike some......
