Tank size: 10 gal
pH: 7.8
ammonia:0
nitrite:0
nitrate:0
kH:?
gH:?
tank temp:82

We recently had 5 fish die so we took a sample of the water to get it tested at the fish store, they told us everything was fine but that the pH was a bit higher than usual. He advised us to use this powder pH stabilizer, we added it in when we got home, tested it again and we were able to lower it to 7.8.

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

We previously had 3 hatchet fish, a rubber nose placosta-something (new to tank, 10 days), and a tire track eel (about 2.5 weeks new)and all died within 48 hours. The hatchet fish died with no symptoms whatsoever, the rubber nose only had a bit of ick but had no other symptoms, and the eel was flicking aggressively and was swimming aimlessly right before she died ( I attempted to save her with a 50% water change). She seemed to have scratched off some a thin layer of skin, though it could have been some sort of film from a disease, I don't know. I know eels are way more sensitive but she was fine till after the 2nd hatchet died and we've been careful with all the water changes and such.

And now my goby is acting really strange, he lays vertically with his head toward the surface in between a decoration and the glass (I've never seen him do that). His coloration got way darker (within the last 24 hours). He is breathing slowly and his fins are clamped on his side. He occasionally moves around in that one spot and he once swam normally to eat though he went right back to that spot. I think his gils are redder than usual but my boyfriend thinks I'm being paranoid. And if it helps, we've had him for about 2 years now.

The zebra danio is completely fine.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 25% twice a week

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Aquasafe water conditioner and the powder used to balance the pH

Tank inhabitants:1 Zebra Danio(new to tank, 11 days)and 1 Goby (can't figure out the type).

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):the zebra danio, the rubbernose and the tire track eel

Exposure to chemicals: None that I know of

Our only guess to what happened was that there were too many fish to begin with or that a parasite was introduced. But now I don't know what's wrong and how to treat Mr. Goby properly.

Your tanks overstocked to me.

How many fish and which type.
Did you treat for whitespot.

Don't use ph adjusters there more trouble than there worth.

How long has the tank been set up, as it rare to have a nitrate reading of 0.
Unless your tap ph is 0, and you have live plants.

I would take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

Also I would suggest investing in some liquid test kits of your own as not all lfs are to be trused.

Red inflamed gills can be bad water quality, bacterial gillrot, gill flukes.

We need your tap ph also.
As fish can die of ph shock.

Stop using the ph adjuster.

Hi yea I think it was overstocked...we've been able to slowly stabilize the pH and our Goby seems to be doing just fine now. We're keeping a close eye on him and we bought our own testing kit. Readings are good for now. I will check the tap pH and I think we are going to keep our fish count to 2 for now. Our tank has been set up for over a year with a 50% water change last Thursday. No medication for ick though.

Thank you for your response!!

Do any fish still have spots the size of a grain of salt.
Any white patches on the fish. Where the spots have joined up to form a patch.
