Well, I went a little overboard with the pics, so I had to cull some of the fuzzier ones. I only discovered the best way to take pics of him today. (Stay far away and zoom up instead of sitting right in front of the tank. :p)
I also managed to get a video of him doing his nose-dive, but it's HUGE (23mbs) and I don't know how to shrink it down.

Anyway, without further ado, I present Darby O'gill!

Here he is in full flare. (Thanks to t.ropical_m.istx3 for the tip on using a mirror!)
The question is, half moon or super delta?

He calms down pretty quick, but I also got this one:

I only used the flash on a couple of pictures, I didn't want to freak him out,
but it makes the blue in his scales sort of green-looking.

"Hi little brother, mind if I come in for a swim?" [Insert diabolical catty laughter]

He loves his little barrel decoration when he's not begging for food.

"Please Mom? Just a few more betta bites? I'm STARVING!"

And last but not least, I have to add this pic because I just think he looks so pretty.

:):) :):)

Edit: I got the video to upload finally, for those of you who have a fast connection. Darby does his nose dive a few times, you'll really notice it when he does it. He really looked like he bonked himself at the end of the video, but he was apparently unfazed. He seems to have gotten the knack of it today, and does a smooth "swoop" without brushing his fins on the decoration.
Please let me know if this is an indicator of any kind of disease or if it's just normal. He seems to only do it when he's excited about me being in front his tank.

He's ADORABLE! He's a very beautiful halfmoon.
And that pic of him in the barrel is soooooooooo cute    also the one with him and the cat, poor cat, must think it's torture

Aww, so he is a half moon then? Good to know! :D Thank you!

Yeah, Maxfield does look a little frustrated in that pic, doesn't he? He's started standing on his hind legs and peering over the edge of my desk to get a look at Darby since I won't let him back up. (I don't want Darby to get stressed, even though he seems totally fine with Max taking up the entire front of his aquarium LOL!)

Actually hes a super delta. A halfmoon will have a 180 degree span when flared, their tail will look like a perfect letter D. If a fish has a span under 180 degrees they're classified as a super delta...

Here are some pics to show you (I've highlighted the edges of the tails)

Heres a halfmoon:

And here's you boy:

Ah, okay. So he's just barely under that 180 degree span then, isn't he?
Thanks for the pics and explanation Jade, that clarifies things for me. Btw, is that your betta in the picture?

yeah one side hes about 180 but the others about 170, so he really does just miss it. lol. Nah I wish he was mine... ALMOST bought him, lol.

Wow, he's a doll! I was cracking up at his video, I'm sure my husband thinks I'm a nut. I mean knows..

Well, maybe I'll just call him a half-moon, since maybe he wasn't flaring as brilliantly as he might be capable of.
Shhh... Nobody has to know! :shifty:

Aww, thank you girl4God81! He really is a goon and so far he's just endlessly entertaining. After I figured out the mirror thing, I showed my fiance when he got home and he was suitably impressed. Funny thing was, when he walked up to the tank a few minutes later and bent down to watch Darby, he got flared at! I had to get in some good teasing after that, because he has never flared at me.

haha, that's so funny! I can relate to that! Actually it's more like how my little guy, Blueberry Fishkins, flares all the time but as soon as I call my husband in to see him, he just looks dull and is hidden under a plant or something. Go figure!

When are you getting married? That's so exciting!

Aww, Blueberry Fishkins sounds so cute! Do you have pics of him? I'd love to see! That is, if you can coax him to show off a little bit LOL!

We haven't set on a date yet. Right now we're mainly worrying about how we're going to afford it. We've been together for so long that there are times we're tempted to just sneak off to the courthouse and get it over with lol. But I want it to be special, so it's going to have to wait a little bit longer.

Lol... my bettas Raj and Afia do that nose dive thing as well when they're about to get fed. Specially my lil Afia. boy when she sees me grab the pellets she goes bonkers!
Your lil fella is so cute though.. getting so excited to see ya! And him in his barrel decor is adorable.

And offtopic.. I can totally relate to the whole relationship thing! Me and my bf (well fiance now).. have been together for 10years and are finally getting married some time next year lol. When? Where? We have no idea heh. I would love nothing more than to go to the courthouse and do it quick that way, but HE wants the wedding... bleh..... hehe :p :D

Really? Wow, that's so funny, because my honey and I have been together for 11 years! It's so strange to meet someone who is in the same circumstance.

I'm so relieved to know that Darby's nose dive is a normal reaction! When he first started doing it, I would cringe every time he headed toward the gravel LOL. I was tempted to feed him just to get him to stop! I think they're smarter than we give them credit for...

adadflkj. and you said my fish were colorful.

Well they are lol! I mean, just look at Cadence's scales and erm- I can't remember the boy's name, not Aladdin but the blue and green guy. He's so beautiful!

He looks bettaful :fish:

He's gorgeous!

Aww, thank you. :*
