A friend of mine (you may remember the thread from several weeks ago on this tank purchase, etc.) got his daughter a 10G tank for her birthday back in March. I TRIED and tried to convince him to do a fishless cycle, but he insisted on getting some fish. SO - another friend of mine had COMPETELY neglected her fish so I rescued 2 zebra danios and a big plec (donated mr. plec to the lfs here) and gave the 2 danios to this guy to cycle his 10G tank with it.

Sadly, he NEVER changed any of the water out during the cycle. I kept asking and asking every single day (we work together) if he had changed out the water and he just kinda said "Yeah....". SO... (i AM getting to my point soon...) last night I volunteered to kid-sit for his daughter just so I could check on the welfare of the fish while I was there. He admitted to me before he left that he had not done ANY water changes for these guys yet :( ... Amazingly, the danios are swimming around seemingly okay - except one of them has a white sort of growth thing on his bottom lip, it kinda looks like a white goatee. Anyway, I tossed in some flakes, and he seemed to eat them just fine, so eating isn't really a problem for him. He swims around like crazy, like danios do, but it almost seemed like the other one was CONSTANTLY chasing him and he was getting irritated. I did a 30% water change for them last night, and tested the water before and after. He didn't have an ammonia test kit, but he did have the nitrates, nitrites, etc. kit. Before the change, the nitrates were up in the unsafe range, and after the change they were back down into the safe range.

I'm assuming that this fish needs treatment. I know nothing about danios, as far as medications, what they can tolerate, etc. - can anyone recommend some advice I can give him on how to treat the fish? (aside from getting off his tushy and giving them some water changes once in a while! uugh) I have lots of things on hand I can just give him to use if that's what should be done... I have maracyn, maracyn 2, tetracycline, coppersafe, maracide, aquarium salt and stress coat. Recommendations?

BettaMomma, I've got a half dozen of the little buggers myself but have never had that particular ailment. You might PM The-Wolf. He knows his danios and if anyone can help out I'm sure it would be him. :)

even though you can't keep an eye on them daily i would not treat them at this point in time....danios are not like bettas in the least bit.....now that the water has been cleaned give their immune system some time to kick in - they are extremely tough....

are you sure the spot wasn't whiskers? a couple of my leopard danios have whiskers...another has almost a hook-shaped extension under his chin that resembles a goatee as you call it - and he has always been like that and is perfectly healthy...if it doesnt look obviously fuzzy like fungus i would NOT throw in any chemicals.....

fish should only be treated with meds when it is absolutely necessary IMO....not as a first attempt at solving the problem...

Hmm, not really.
It's very odd. It's only on his bottom lip - and it's a very clean white spot (line I guess I could say moreso), kinda like it's inflamed flesh rather than any cottony type stuff. It sort of looks like he might have gotten a vertical cut on his lip and it swelled up really big. Sorry I can't explain it any better. I've never seen anything like it. :/

I would ask if I could go over and get a picture of it, but those crazy things don't sit still long enough to snap anything anyway.

after hearing that it sounds more and more like the "extension" on 1 of my leopard danios and 1 of my pearl danios also has it now that i think of it...i dont know what it is, and could be completely natural, as my fish have no problems eating/swimming/etc the whole time i've had them

A few daily water changes should clear it up and maybe add some melafix if it's inflamed, good luck.

Okay -
I'll just MAKE HIM keep a better eye on his fish - and if anything changes he can tell me. I will maybe also ask him if I can run over there at lunch someday to see how they're doing.

I'm pretty sure it's not whiskers, it's something that's developed over time because several weeks ago when I dropped them off there, they were both in perfect condition, and I saw them again a few weeks ago when I had to stop by there for something, they were okay then. When you look at him from the side his bottom lip sticks out a good 1/8" like a pretty major underbite. I kinda thought danios must be extremely tough little buggers since they survived the nasty muck they were in before they got dumped into an aquarium that cycled with them in it and no water changes!

I'm going to give him some of my aquarium salt to toss in there and we'll just leave them be.

Thanks for the info!

White spots can clear on there own, if it's just a white spot sounds like it's got infected abit, but nothing serious, just daily water changes and the melafix should take care of the inflamation, the spot is due to bad water quality.

Yeah - I'd like to kick this guy right square in the pants for the way he treated these fish. I harped on him about doing water changes, he said he would - I warned him if he got a tank of that size he would have to be responsible for water changes, etc. I'm a tad bit peeved at him, but I suppose it's not really my business. ALTHOUGH he did come to me for advice on the whole situation before they even got the tank... As long as I do what I can to get the fish back to healthy again and don't seem like I'm trying to tell him what to do. I'm also going to try to talk him into getting some live plants in there - that should help with the toxins in the water somewhat, eat least.

Thanks for your help everyone - I'll try to keep you posted on what happens with them. :)

Is the mouth inflamed as well and by how much.

That's ok, tell the guy just to keep an eye on it to make sure it dosn't get bigger or worse, though i no you will end up getting him better.
